Have any of you guys ever make and hunt out of a natural ground blind and if so is it worth it and what did you think of it? Do they work better than most or all store bought blinds?
Natural blinds do work, however the store bought blinds brushed in real good with the surrounding forage is better. It conceals your movements better than a pure natural blind. Don't let it discourage you from trying it, if you hunt the wind and use the terrain to your advantage it's more than achievable.
I believe in Season 4 of BHOD Justin hunted from a natural ground blind a few times and even had a mature buck encounter. The buck lived by the hair on his neck but it was awesome to watch! I dont even know if that was considered a "blind" he just found a little spot and sat in it from the looks of it.
Last year I shot my buck from the ground. I just stood close to a cluster of trees and used them to hide behind. I cleared the ground around it so I could move depending on where the deer came from. The deer never saw me till I was about to squeeze the trigger! It was a little late for him Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I killed a buck 2 years ago while sitting on the ground. I was between 2 hickory trees and just crisscrossed a few fallen branches behind me to break up my outline.
They can work if you take the time to construct a good dense blind. Wind, patience and sitting still in quiet are key. A large number of bowhunters only hunt from the ground. It can be and has been done with great success.
do it all the time... here in the west, after a clear cut starts to grow back with brush, the deer head for the middle of it, no trees... hunting from the ground is the only way to go, and by using natural cover, if ya have to move, it's a lot easier
I've found they are very effective, especially trying to get into short planted pines, the ones to small for any type of stand. The deer trails are always beat down in those areas. Getting a blind from the store and brushing it in has always worked best for me.
I sat in natural ground blinds for all 18 years that I rifle hunting in PA. I either sat behind a rock or sat on a stump and used a few forked sticks for the corners, then used branches and brush to go across the front and sides. As Josh said, having a bush or brush in the background is the key to break up your outline.
Get some paracord, some zip ties, and a hand saw and you can build one sweet blind. Just let your imagination run wild. I know a few guys who only hunt from the ground and they always fill the freezer.
I used to hog hunt and rifle deer hunt from the ground until I got bit 2 years ago into the a$$ by a rattlesnake. Luckily, its teeth didn't get thru my clothes and I didn't even have to go to the doc
I use them all the time. I use them for both deer and turkey. Like already said, just let your imagination run wild when building one. I will usually use small pine saplings. Cut them to desired height, make cut at an angle and push them into the ground. I've done this numerous times and I've had deer within 10 feet of me. Of course, the wind was in my favor, but I was never seen.
I've killed many deer on their level with natural blinds. Like other said just make sure you are broken up with your background, hunt the wind and don't move. Can easily be done, just more challenging than 20 feet above them.
