It appears to be a pro-active attempt to prevent CWD which makes perfect sense. But.... what scents do you guys use that are synthetic? I know most of the big name attractant companies claim to use "all natural" or "real" deer urine to make their product. Thoughts? http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/wildlife/diseases/cwd/natural-deer-urine-attractants/
Ahh..another case of government overreacting to a situation they don't fully understand. There has been zero scientific evidence that CWD can be spread through urine via normal interaction with the lure itself or with the ground on which the lure is applied. The only time they were able to transmit CWD via urine was to concentrate it at something like 100x the normal amount found in an infected animal and inject it directly into a mouse's brain. Not exactly a "real world" scenario. I'm not saying that I'm against the ban, it's just frustrating that instead of spending money on research to help stop CWD they're putting a band-aid on the problem and eliminating urine-based lures. If anything it's only delaying the seemingly inevitable. In any case, most major scent companies have synthetic lures in their line-up. Canada has banned urine-based lures for several decades so they're pretty readily available. Tink's for example has 69-X, Power Buck and also a synthetic doe urine. The Power Scrape mock scrape starter is also synthetic.
I am hunting VA as well I had been collecting Ever Calm every trip to the sporting goods store doo I have been looking for a synthetic some of the others are Top Secret will be on shelves in the next few weeks and team Fitzgerald is a synthetic I also have started looking into home brew covers and lures hope to see some real world input on your thread
You would think the indirect effect could be positive. Less demand for urine should equal less captive deer. There might not be proof that urine will cause CWD, but there is proof the farms that create the urine have the potential to spread the disease.
Some spots in northern Virginia and a little south have had small episodes of cwd. And with the liberal doe seasons the last 5 years or so, the deer numbers are down. People are rushing to claim cwd is to blame for the low deer numbers in some spots, but it is not. That being said, I don't use deer scents anyways.
so, what game warden is gonna ask, hey, whats in the bottle?? and at what cost will they take to test to see if its DEER URINE??.
CWD is just an excuse for killing off the deer and keeping the herd to a minimum. I hunt in SW WI where there is supposedly a high CWD rate, but I have never seen a deer with it. Never heard of anybody's deer having it. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I think it's a way for the DNR to justify handing out doe tags like candy. Sent from my SM-G900R4 using Tapatalk
I appreciate all of the input. I am curious as well how exactly they will "test" the substance in the bottle.
Maybe another use for the urine that is not obvious. Example: It is illegal to bait deer in Illinois, however you can still buy all of the typical minerals for deer at Walmart because they could be used for cattle or farm raised deer.
Yep. Plus they have so much in stock they need to sell it and dont care if the average hunter even knows the rules come season.
