Hello all. New member here, with a question, of course. I'm shooting a Bowtech Tomkat, @ about 52 lbs of pull, 27" draw, and shoot ICS Hunter Pro arrows. I'm wondering if I have sufficient kinetic energy with this setup to use the Killzone for whitetail? And if the answer is "yes", which is the better choice of tip - the cut-on-contact or the trophy? Thanks in advance. Hope to be an active participant as time goes by. JTH
It might be but im not sure myself. I would think that 52 pounds is enough but you might not get too many pass through's.
Probably will work but its far and away no your best choice for your set up. You would be better served with a fixed blade Broadhead on the smaller side, 1 1/8 or so. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Definitely not, I shoot a very similar setup and have learned the hard way that those kind of mechanicals aren't good for that KE. I've lost one buck this year using the nap blood runner and I'm not going back to mechanicals.
Thanks for the responses. If I were to be pulling 60 lbs, would the answer be different? Would that be sufficient poundage for the Killzones? JTH
I was in your shoes a couple years ago when I was a 27" draw at about 52lbs, I would say no. shoot a good fixed blade this year, like a magnus, or a G5 or slick trick. and im not sure if your a youth or not, or still growing, but if you are wait til next year, 28" 55 is probably the minimum I would shoot any mech at, besides like a big cut rage which requires alot more KE
I would say that 60 lb should be sufficient. If possible try to wait and see if you grow. Right now my bow is 65-70lb at 26.6" and it barley has pass through's on Button bucks using rage 2 blade. I am getting it switched out to a 28" draw which should make my pass through''s much better.
I probably wouldnt shoot a big expandable with that set up. Try slick trick magnums, i had awesome blood trails with them when i used them!
youre initial question was "I'm wondering if I have sufficient kinetic energy with this setup to use the Killzone for whitetail?" For us to figure out your KE we'll need your arrow speed in f.p.s. and the total weight of your hunting arrow in grains. Unless these people above me know something I dont, then they are just guessing if you do or do not have enought KE to shoot these heads. My initial thoughts are no you do not at your given pounds of pull and draw length. Especially when you consider that the killzone is a 2" cut broadhead. It takes significant energy to open those blades and make it pass through a whitetail. I have 81 ft lbs of KE and am able to pass through deer with the killzones. I've blown through a few shoulder blades as well with them. They are definitely a lethal head if you have the right setup.
Just knowing your specs I'd say that the 2" Killzone probably isn't the best broadhead for you. However, a little bird did tell me that there may be a new Killzone option coming out next year that would work great for you. :D If you need something to shoot right now I'd look at a fixed blade broadhead. That should give you the best results with your current bow and arrow setup.
So your saying there will be a 3 bladed inch and a half version.............. I like it!!!! Hey its Christmas season, I can only wish, right?
I just picked up some Killzones this week. Saying that my set up 65 lbs at a 26 inch draw would not be a good fit ?????? My KE is about 61 ft pounds. It also says not to use with crossbows and not to exceed 350 ft/sec. I have an Excalibur Phoenix shooting at 305 IBO. How does shooting a crossbow esp a slower one matter? To me that would be perfect for that crossbow.
The KZ will work (meaning it will open on impact) with any bow you shoot it out of - even a draw length check bow. That doesn't always mean it's the best option for everyone's setup. I say you should be fine with 61 ft/lbs of KE, but IMO that's pushing the low side of what "I" like to see for a big expandable. Again, the choice is yours. As for crossbows - I think that warning is more of a blanket statement than an absolute for all cases. Most of today's xbows are shooting 340+ fps and they just don't want people complaining about blades opening on the shot. Keep in mind there's a lot more force and "jolt" behind one of those arrows on launch than a regular compound.
Thanks for the feedback. I guess there is only one way to find out whether they will work well for my set up or not is to simply try them out. Sucks being a short draw archer!! When are the new NAP heads coming out for sale? No word on them yet as I see on here or on NAPs site. You mentioned there are a few new ones that may work better for short draw or less poundage shooters. As far as the crossbow is concerned the heads could deploy a little faster than a compound I figured that. I may just leave the Slick Tricks on those anyway.
The new heads will be debuted in a few weeks at the ATA Show, but I don't believe they'll hit shelves for a few months after that. Probably late Spring/early Summer I would imagine.
I also shot my first deer this year with the Killzone. I'm pulling 70lbs, 28 1/2". With a 411 gr arrow my bow chronoe'd at about 275 feet per sec. I'm not sure of the KE formula but at 27yds from my ground blind my Killzone broke a rib going in and coming out. I recoverd my arrow about 12 feet past the point of impact. I'd worry about your set up not having enough oomph to make a good clean kill........not unless you were 5 yards away with a perfect heart shot. You may want to stick with a good sharp fixed blade
Stringpuller#1 did you mean towards me or the original poster? I did your calculations for you its ft/sec squared 275X275 multiplied by arrow weight 411 gr/in. then divided by the constant 450240. 275X275X411 = 69.03 lbs of Kinetic Energy 450240
After seeing this video I wouldn't worry about the broadheads not working. http://www.newarchery.com/videogallery/broadheads/killzone-overview-and-tips-1326/
Thanks everyone! I was a Muzzy guy for years but have had a tough time getting them to fly well with my setup. I tried the Montec but they're pricey and not durable (imho). So, I'll try my Muzzy's again, and eagerly await a new Killzone that may be better suited to we short-draw, weak people. I got a chuckle out of some of the responses asking about my potential for "growth". I will 50 years of age in March and I'm shrinking.
