I don't share trail cam photos either. The last time I did, some guy in Illinois started posting it up and claiming it as his own. Another time, I had a guy message me that he looked up where my farms were. It's just not worth it to me to share that kind of information until the deer is dead. Too many people out there that want to kill big bucks but not put any effort into it.

It’s all about what your goal is. If a neighbor kills one of “my bucks” cuz he saw my trail camera pictures online then cool. I hunt to enjoy time with my friends (ultimate goal), not to be a “big buck killer”. I film to share it with my buddies and people I know all over the country, not to “be on TV”. I name deer cuz I want too.

It’s a catch 22 because we’re supposed to be ambassadors for our sport, we have dwindling numbers and we’re slowly losing support. Yet a lot of guys are total ****s and top secret UFO file keepers about what they do and how they do it...kinda...selfish. Now I’m not going to open the gates and post my address online, but I’ll show an eager young gun a couple trail camera pictures...lol.

To each his own I guess.

You can't say to each his own after calling people total ****s and top secret UFO file keepers because they chose to not share.

Wow, I guess your way must be better. Where I live, we get way too much attention for growing big bucks to plaster them on the internet. If and when you start to have serious issues with locals and out of state trespassers and poachers, you will change your attitude. That much I can guarantee. I share information with my neighbors also, but not with the world. Your view is very sheltered in my opinion and you must not have a lot of big deer to attract a lot of attention. I know you like big deer, you have posted about them often. But, you can t worry about what you don't have, so that makes things a bit easier I guess. If I shared photos of B&C bucks, they get LOTS of attention. 140's, not so much. Keeping your hunting spots and activities private is far from selfish. Its smart. I would bet I have allowed more people to hunt my "private" properties than most. But, if that makes me a "****", then I would hate to see what you would call most of my non-resident land owning neighbors. Most of whom own land here now because of the internet and filmed hunts. Good luck with ol' Mossy Horn Chuck this season.

I name the buck's to make them easier to keep up with....they are all part of a study group that I compile data of each year. I also enjoy sharing pic's, good luck finding a buck I'm watching on the 200,000+ acers I run cam's on....these bucks have zero worries, lol. Unless someone just lucks up and stumbles on one by chance. The buck I shot last year was named 17, 6-2.....nothing fancy, and I had collected data on him for three years before I shot him.

Since you are the face of crossbows here, it is all your fault.

I see your point, and wasn’t necessarily aiming my comment towards you. Guess it was kinda a “blanket statement” of how I feel.

Internet forums are a place for sharing, some people come in and talk a lot but don’t ever share, just puff up there chest (not saying you in particular). I’m very cognizant of your reputation for killing monsters. And yes, I don’t have the same problems as you do. If someone wants to name deer and post them...why not? If someone wants to film their adventures (which i know you don’t like) why not? The owners of the site do both. Some of the most popular hunters on the planet share everything and still kill. There’s also the opposite extreme, where someone purposely uses the internet to their advantage.

I’ve grown less fond of “producing” and more fond of “enjoying” as I’ve gotten older on this site. Does that make sense?

So--- for 10 years I was part of a hunting club that had quite a few farms under lease (3500 acres). Naming the bucks was the easiest way to discuss hunting plans and strategies with the other members about the bucks that ran those properties.

It's hard to keep track of 40 or 50 different mature bucks on that much ground with out a way to differentiate them.

Now that I am just hunting the family farm and my lease place I don't give them names much anymore.

I have no problems with naming deer. I have no problems with someone posting pictures of deer. I don't care if you want to post a map to your favorite stand. It's just not something that works out very well for everyone. I used to share a lot and it came back to bite me hard on several occasions. I have answered many PM's about deer hunting and techniques and will continue to chime in with my .02 cents worth on strategy threads.

Also, I don't mind anyone filming their adventures, when done well. But, that single "thrill" has cost more bad shots and chest thumping than pro wrestling and Nascar combined. Filming hunts brought commercialized hunting to light. That in turn ruined Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa to name a few. My area is overrun with out of state money and guys that film shows and outfitters. Some of whom claim to be residents for the benefit of tags. All while running businesses in GA, MI, etc. Their wives and children still live in other states. Its a joke and has cost many of the guys I know to either give up hunting all together, or be very limited in where they can now go. Prior to outdoors video, there was zero issues with gaining access to unlimited acres of some of the best hunting in the world here. Now, pay to play or gut it out on very limited public. Heck, I cashed in on my best farm and sold it for over five times what I paid for it 13 years prior. Having what others want and are jealous of just became more than I cared to deal with any longer. I still have good ground to hunt, but I'm not going to stress about deer anymore. Been there and done that. In the end, its not worth it. That's my take on getting older, a lot older than you. lol

    Now ain’t that the truth...lol

I see your point in relation to where you live, and I’ve always said it...unfortunately hunters have a great number of dishonest people who take advantage, steal and lie. It sucks...but it’s the truth.

Maybe hat why I enjoy being full disclosure so much, I don’t have to worry about hiding anything, which is a good feeling.

The leases are starting up around here but there’s also a lot of old family farms that’s arnt going anywhere for awhile. It’s a niche I can enjoy for the time being.

It's really no different than being tight-lipped about your favorite fishing hole or best mushroom hunting spot. We all do it to some extent, or end up wishing we had.

Kinda funny today at work a guy comes up to me and shows me some pics of a buck and asks me what I would name him, I said too small. The buck was 2 -3 at the most and not even past his ears. He told me I was full of crap if I said I would not shoot him, he is a new guy so I told him to stop by my office and I would show him the pictures of the bucks taken off my property.

If it is one that I have a lot of history with I am more likely to put a name to it.

I do like naming deer for the simple reason that it is easier to discuss a deer to a friend or family member you hunt with. Fun letting my nephews name them as well as they enjoy picking off the wall names.

Love my trail camera hunting, but I wander the Manistee National Forest in Northern Michigan and see too many different deer walking the vast forest lands to name them. Also, when I used to name some of the better bucks, it seemed like I never saw them during the season. They simply have a lot of forest to travel and food is virtually everywhere, so it's hard to zero in on them without spooking them from the core areas. Maybe I'll start naming my deer when I walk up to place my tag on it. Name, or no name, big forest deer are worthy opponents.
