  1. Naming target deer poll

I've seen more guys on television shows who name their target deer and watch them year over year etc, my buddies and I haven't done this, yet all have multiple good deer on cam etc.. Its usually just
this guy, or that big guy etc,

    what do you do?

I don't share pics. Also I don't believe in naming anything that does not respond to being called by it's name. Also a bow does not need to eat.

Depends if I have history with the deer then I tend to just so people know which deer I'm talking about.

    Why not?

As far as naming deer, I don't. I just keep mental notes of what deer I'm dealing with.

Depends on who and how many ppl you talk to about your deer herd. I do because it makes it easy to reference while talking to family and friends

I have to admit, I did at one point a few years ago. Now i think it's a little :dan:, but to each there own. If you have the first world problem of keeping track of all the potential shooter bucks, then go for it. let the hater's hate. If you only have two bucks showing up, then its kind of :dan:

To me it comes down to how many nice deer that you have that might be worthy of discussing with your friends, family, hunting partners, etc. Like someone said... if you only have one or two deer worth mentioning in a conversation it’s kind of a waste of time but if you have several good ones it seems fairly natural to me that you would want to be able to differentiate them in a discussion. That doesn’t mean that the names have to be over the top (ie King James, the Dominator, MeglaDonkey). I do think that guys trying to get cute with the names can indeed be pretty :dan: but calling a buck “Split brow 10” or “the wide 9” is pretty logical. That’s what we do. Very seldom will a name get more elaborate than Triple Split or Old Snag.

That said I think whatever anyone wants to do is fine as long as they are enjoying it. That’s the point.

I did the same thing and agree, if it helps you then do it. Personally I don’t ever have more than the “big 8” or the “big 10” to refer to.

Had a phase where I wanted to. Then realized that I only have 1-2 bucks that would be considered shooters anyway so I didn’t bother with the names.

Over the years I’ve named deer:

    Freak Daddy
    Freak Daddy Jr
    The big 8
    The 13
    Halloween Buck
    Brett Favre
    Handlebars
    Junior
    Senior
Brows (reused this one a few time)
    Senior Jr
    G2 buck (also reused)
    Captain Hook
    Hook Jr
    Skyscraper
    Wide Guy
    Curly
    Brokentine
    Muley
    High and Tight
    Cowhorn
    The Gimp
    Jim Beam

    My buddies also name theirs:

    Bobo
    Big 10
    Hot Wheels
    Goofy
    Curly
    Randall
    Raplhie

When you hunt big farms and have multiple deer on cam year after year you have to call him something besides “that 10 who’s now a 9 and was an 8” lol

I am in the same mindset as Simon/OH. If it was just me keeping track or I just had a couple bucks...I'd probably not bother but under the circumstances it makes it easier to manage deer and hunters/hunts by giving the deer a handle. Otherwise it gets too confusing trying to talk about management goals, etc...

    "Wide... Insert points here"
    "Tall... Insert points here"
    "Heavy... Insert points here"
    "Giant... Insert points here"

Makes it easy here in NY, but I'm sure in states where you might have 5 of each of the above on one farm, you might have to get more specific.

Kind of the same here. We generally just call it what it is.

Full disclosure, I absolutely loathe the naming of deer and if I never heard "hit list", "target buck", "management buck" or "smoked him" again that would be just fine ;)

Also...i only name 3 year olds and older. And management is a GIANT part of my hunting experience. If it’s not...I can understand why you wouldn’t name deer.

    Everyone’s different. Same team.
