Nope, never got into it. Then again, with the property I hunt, most of the deer I shoot weren't on camera to begin with.

This is pretty much my answer as well. We let 3 other people hunt our ground and naming a buck usually by what they look like helps us to communicate if maybe I put a certain deer off limits or to help us track other ones.

If one of the guys is telling me he saw an 8 point over in the hill top stand that doesn't mean a lot because we have tons of small eights running around. But if he tells me he saw the browtine buck I know he is talking about a big 8 we only have one pic of.

I usually only name shooters or deer that are off limits.

Haven't named a deer for a couple years. It was fun when we came up with names like Brasky back in 2009, but have lost interest in naming them anymore.

I didn't read the replies however I do it simply so I can reference a particular deer when talking to/about him. It can be hard to differentiate between deer if you're hunting multiple properties or hunting with various people. "I saw Jimbo this morning" is a lot easier than "I saw that one 2 year old 8 point with the little kicker off his right G2 this morning. You know, the one we got pictures of 2 months ago and haven't seen since? No, not that one. The one with the split on his RIGHT, not his LEFT."

I do try to give them names that are relative to characteristics of the deer and not just same name I pull out of thin air. For example we have a buck with a crooked rack who is named "**** Cheney" because, well, he's crooked. :)

I name some of them for the same reasons as most. It makes it so much easier in conversation with the friends that will also be hunting with me. Some are off limits, and others are specific target deer. We don't get too carried away with the names, but the naming process can be fun too. I could not care less what anyone calls a specific deer. Most of the does I just call, "Tony".

Usually name the better ones with a characteristic of theirs to make it easier when talking about several different bucks in several different areas. Hook, KB ( killer brows ), Freaky, Trash, Big 4, Old 4, Long Horn, Stickers, Flyers, Ugly and Ball are some of the different names we are using or have used.

Really couldn't care in the least if someone likes it or not. We do it for our amusement... not yours.

Only named one buck. Chased "Cyclops" for 4 seasons until he was taken by a poacher in Nov 2012. He was missing his right eye thus the name. I understand why it is done for those videoing and for those keeping tabs on their "herd" (LOL!!!), but I just never got into it.

Plus, I rarely see a single buck more than once during a season so I would be scratching my pea-brain head trying to remember his name as he came into and out of my shooting lanes! Simple idiots like me need to make the game simple! Names are just too difficult.

I don't name the deer I'm hunting because I don't wanna feel like I'm hunting a family pet!
