My truck (Silverado) is in the shop for a rebuild! 2008 5.3 L Silverado with 80.000 miles getting new pistons, rings and who knows what else. The dealer has already had it a week today It burnt 5 quarts of oil since my last oil change, 2900 miles! Truck has been taken care of very well. Regular oil changes etc. They say carbon build up caused my rings to seize on my pistons. This was due to a poorly designed PCV valve in the valve cover allowing excessive oil into the cylinders of the 5.3 L engines with the active fuel management. Guess it is a common problem, although not to my trucks extent, usually they just have to decarbonize the cylinders with a cleaning solution.
That sucks... But it is impressive that you made it that long with only 80k on the rig. Do you have a separate truck for work? Hope it didn't dig into the wallet all that much. I'll refrain from any and all Chevy jokes that initially popped into my head.
It is covered under my extended warranty (glad I purchased it, it was $1700 and this repair will surpass that)... So that's good. They gave me a 2015 loaner truck but it is an extended cab (mine is a crew) and it's tight with my boys in the back seat. No need to refrain... I don't take trucks as serious as my Buckeyes!
Obviously not.... you drive a Chevy! You have me already second guessing letting my warranty expire last month on the Taco...
Hmmm.a flat rate shop rebuild ....you might want to start looking to trade that one off when you get it back.
Sorry to hear that. We didn't take the extended warranty on the wife's Ford Escape ( 2012 ). I still can since we are still covered under factory warranty for now, but I would have to do it in the next couple months. Out of the last 5 vehicles before this one... we bought it and never had to used it. Just seems to be a waste of money. Course most of them have been Fords. :P I am just not sure we will. I plan on trading off her Escape when it hits 90,000. Right now it only has 26,000 on it. Tim
You travel short distances normally when you drive it? Carbon buildup happened to me when i lived just a few miles from work... the engine hardly ever got to operating temp allowing buildup.
I have a 2011 Z71, I have had the all the AFM valves replaced. After a long fight with two dealerships trying to tell them that what they though it was, was wrong, they said I had an exhaust leak, I'm not a idiot, I told them the sound that I was showing them was mechanical. I took the truck to a different dealer and the lead mechanic took me out for a drive and within 3 mins, he said " your AFM valves are bad, I do not know which one, but I will replace all of them just to be sure." The cat had to be replaced recently. I have 72k on mine. Luckily I still have the factory warranty. The cat was covered under and emissions warranty, and I'm glad it was, dealer wanted $900 to to change that. I love my Silverado, I do not like the "normal" ticking sound when your start it up though. As far as you carbon build up, do you use E85 at all? I'm hesitant to try it, I would think it would cause trouble with the engine.
Had 2 Chevys with well over 280k on both of them and never had a single problem.. Still going strong. Pick of he litter I suppose... I hope my new Tacoma will match the Chevys.
Shortest drives are 10 to 20 minutes. No, I have never used E85. Also, I never noticed a ticking sound at start up, I will pay more attention when I get it back. My truck is a little louder than stock though because of a K&N cold air intake and dual exhaust though. There is a chance that masks the noise you mentioned.
I sold my last Silverado with 240,000 miles to a local guy. He had the truck for probably 5 years after that.
Monday will be three weeks that they have had it. I called to ask what the work order on it was today, she said she would have someone call me back tomorrow. I caught them right before closing.
I got you beat. My truck has been at my local shop for going on a year and a half. Mostly my fault. My transmission went out and the originally quoted me $2800 to put a new one in. I told him I'd have to get back to him, which I didn't do for six months or so. I finally contacted him to see if he could find me a better deal on a reman. They quoted be about $1500 and I said go ahead and do it, then they forgot to place the order. I finally called him a couple weeks ago and let him know I was really needing to get that truck back. He said he'd get it done ASAP. I don't really blame them, they are very busy and I told him I wasn't in a real hurry for it back.
