1. I forget who said what and am not going back through the pages to find so I will try to answer some questions, you will know if it was you that asked. I tried the heads again because it was said the the pre opening of the blades was corrected, that was the problem in the first use of them. I always try different heads although my head of preference is the Shuttle-T 125 gr. Never, ever lost a deer with this head knock on wood. 2. I shoot every day or I should say try to. LOL. 3. I shot an expanable one year, I forget the make but the results were as good as the Rage. Will try to put up a pic later to see if someone can identify it as I still have one. 4. My set up is Bowtech Allegence, 65lb, 30" draw and Gold Tip Pro Hunter 75/95
I tried them, and didn't like them. Had a few friends that have switched back to fixed heads after using the Rage's too. They just aren't for everyone, use what you have confidence in. For me, using a fixed head just eliminates one more thing that could go possibly wrong.
This is exactly the problem. Too many people think that the reason to use a mechanical is for better accuracy, when it really should have absolutely no bearing. ANY good fixed head will shoot just as accurately from a well tuned bow. But, too many bowshooters believe a mechanical is a quick fix for arrow flight and start launching arrows at deer. Arrows with too little KE or momentum for many reasons, including poor flight. Rage's advertising has successfully created a wounding army. Disgusts me.
LOL That's the same guy that thinks all of this "tech" stuff and bow tuning is crap. He is who the rage BH was designed for, people that don't know and don't care about how well their equipment functions or how it should function.
Amen! I've seen too many guys shooting paper plate size groups, screw on a head simply because its advertised to shoot like a field point and says they are ready to go. Very disappointing. A good fixed blade will shoot as well as any mech head with proper tuning.
I'm certain it happens, as it does with ANY broadhead. I generally sight my bows in out to 60yards. My standard is a 4" group out to 50. I do this with field points. When I throw on the Rage practice heads or old Rage BHs, they are consistent with my field points. All that tech stuff is- is a way to drain more money from people, in my opinion. I use some of it, but just like you dont have to be shooting a bullet hole through paper to be sighted in well enough to put consistent and accurate rounds down range- you dont need to exhaust yourself matching all of your gear. I learned from my brother and he is an absolutely amazing archer. I consider myself to be pretty a good archer, but he is literally amazing- traditional and compound(probably better with traditional). He is the same way. He makes sure all of his equipment is within spec. He uses mid to high end gear and just shoots a lot. He doesnt stress over this tech stuff.. So, there is evidence, FIRST HAND, that I am correct. I understand WHY people go to such great lengths, but it is NOT necessary.
Tuning your bow and arrow to shoot and function together correctly doesn't cost a dime and maximizes the energy transfer from bow to arrow which would be needed for a high width expandable like the rage BH.
Ok, I'll buy that... But how "short" am I selling myself by picking the correct shaft for my DL and DW via the manufacturers chart. Throwing on a set of blazers and shooting a 100g BH ? I dont build my own bows, I bring them to a friend who is an archery tech. I buy the best stuff I can afford. Everything is put on correctly. I shoot my tail off and hold consistent to my standards. I dont calculate KE, but I do sometimes shoot through the chron to get the fps...But more or less just our of curiosity..
Is your brother Byron Ferguson by any chance? I don't want to speak for Trad guys, but I think that if your brother is an amazing archer, he would admit that he couldn't possibly be better (more accurate) with traditional gear. (BTW, that's not a knock on trad gear.)
Of course he is more accurate with his compound..but he is a better traditional shooter than compound shooter- if you were to compare against others using the same(like a trad and a compound category, separately.
Rick sorry you didn't find your deer. I'm a fan of mechanicals but I've not tried the Rage heads. One of my friends uses Rage heads and has had great results with them. I've lost deer on shots that I thought were perfect, sometimes **** really does happen.
You are not selling yourself any shorter than 90% of the other hunters that use bow and arrows which, IMO, is a sad reflection on bowhunting. If I were trad hunter my main complaint about compounds would be that thay have allowed hunters into bowhunting that are clueless about bows and arrows and how they function together. That's the real tradition of bowhunting that is falling to the wayside is the understanding of your killing equipment and getting to know the ins and outs of how they work together and how different things affect their performance. Now it's just "get the fastest bow you can afford and shoot a stick with a BH that flys like a fieldpoint" and all you need to know is how to pull the trigger on a release.
Poster child for Rage. Wouldnt want to get all exhausted tuning and matching. A lot easier to just screw on a Rage and start flinging arrows. Dont forget the Scentlok, then you dont have to worry about the wind either. This bowhunting thing can be so easy! lol
this is actually pretty funny. however i will admit to the following. i did buy the rage broad head because of the fieldpoint accuricy claim. being new to bowhunting i was nervous bout having to resight the bow for a fixed blade broadhead. maby its time to invest in a newer bow? if the browning doesnt have enough ke to get the job done, hey i just had a thought im using carbon arrows too is that going to affect the ferformance of the killing shot? dam now im second guessing my whole set up.lol should i be using a an aluminum arrow?
people are mislead by advertisement i know when i started out no one in my family knew the first thing about bow hunting i had to learn everything on my own i just went bought a bow some arrows and started letting them fly. I didnt know anything about BH tuning and having the correct arrow for your bow i thought an arrow was an arrow. I knew nothing about paper tuning never even heard of it. I will say i have learned alot since then and now im slowly fixing my bow tuning it so i get the most out of it. I learned alot from this site on how to fix the bow problems but i feel like there needs to be something more that really helps new bow hunters to learn how to do these things.
If I was to say my G5 strikers are grouping right with my Rages, But I always have a rage nocked, am I one of those lazy careless archers? :P
