My youngest son strikes again! This time, late muzzleloader season. He hunted several times in some pretty cold conditions and had a lot of really close calls without getting shots off. Some real heartbreaker bucks too. But he stuck with it and finally connected on this buck at 122 yards with his youth Rossi .50 cal. It was his first fairly difficult tracking job and he did really well. The buck had doubled back once and it took a while but he got back on his trail. It was the evening before we got snow. The deer probably only went a little over 100 yards but it was in some really thick stuff. He let this buck walk the evening before but couldnt resist again. lol It had an 18" inside spread.
Great year for your son. Congratulation's to the young man!! Fletch, How old of a buck you think? The only reason I ask Is I assume you have good genetics there. I've always wanted to ask you this too- How many P&Y 2.5's running around and what' the biggest 2.5 you've ever saw Inches wise? Sorry for the mini hijack.
I havent looked back through sheds yet to see if I have any, but I think this buck is only 3 1/2. He isnt a deer that I remember seeing or getting photos of in the past, but a clean 8 pt. is pretty common here also. Actually a good deer to be taken out in my opinion. He had a stud of a young 8 pt (2 1/2) with him that was definitely off limits. It would have made P&Y for sure. Really tall but only about 16" inside. I hope he can make it for a few more years. 2 1/2 y.o. P&Y are probably not really uncommon. A friend that hunted here this year found a skull in the creek of a deer that we are pretty sure was only 3 1/2 and it grossed 191 inches! We are guessing by the teeth and small mass. Crazy potential, we didnt have any pictures or sheds or even know the deer existed. Also, thanks to all for the congrats. I will pass it along.
How are you with shoveling snow? We got about 7" yesterday. lol It seems some of his buddies are interested in being adopted also.
I sometimes hurt my back, but otherwise, I have lots of experience! 7" isn't much in the lake effect snow world I live in. Which room is mine? I don't mind being upstairs. I actually prefer it.
We actually have a spare bedroom upstairs. But I'm not sure that my wife is up to adopting you unless you want to wear pink skirts and play dress-up. She always wanted a girl. I'm guessing that might be a pretty big price to pay just to shoot a whitetail.
