This story started in the spring of 2009. My then 11 year old son had just passed his hunter safety class. He got a perfect score and by doing so was invited on a "Learn to turkey hunt" weekend. He saw and heard alot of birds but came home empty handed. Well, he was hooked and begged me to take him this year keeping in mind I have NEVER turkey hunted before.

So after purchasing some gear....tent, calls, decoys, ammo, choke tube etc. we went two weekends ago during the WI youth hunt. We heard turkeys both days near us but they wouldn't show themselves. His actual season was this past week and he is in school so we knew it would be a weekend hunt only. Saturday was really windy and again heard some but no sightings. Sunday finally had a tom come in silent to 50 yards and a fox came thru and chased him off.

We decided to take a walk to the property line and could hear more turkeys down in a woods we can't hunt. At this point I had been telling my son that I'd rather sit all day deer hunting and not see a single deer then do this "stupid" turkey hunting. LOL

We got back in the tent and a gobbler sounded off down in the woods we hunt. I got out the box call and tried my best. He answered!! Ten seconds later we hear leaves crunching right behind our tent. He must have ran up the hill. I peek out the side window and there he is heading to the decoys. With some difficulty I get my son to take a knee and get the barrel out the front window. As I'm leaning over his shoulder I am looking right down his barrel with him. The tom got to the decoys and started to walk up the hill away from us. I whispered shoot, shoot! My son drilled him at 20 yards and a few flops later he laid his hands on his first turkey.

He then asked me what I thought of turkey hunting. I told him "it's ok" lol My season is this week and he gave me some inspration.

    20lbs with a 10" beard and 3/4" spurs.
