So, I take my oldest boy Jess out for his first ever deer hunt last night after work. He's 10 and has an out of state tag for E. WA. He can't hunt Idaho until he 12.. but we can jump the border as long as he's passed hunters safety which he has. Anway....He gets out of the pickup and says with just the most excited look on his face and energy in his voice "Dad, I don't care if I shoot a buck or doe" I just want to get a deer. That's all had to say ...taking me back to when I got to deer hunt for the first time 30 years ago. We had a great night/evening though Jess didnt get to pull the trigger. He was 1 tree trunk away from getting a shot at an old mature doe standing broadside right before dark. We will be back after his first whitetail Wed. evening and this weekend if need be. It's a short season over there but I am already loving every minute of taking my boy. Buck or Doe... doesn't matter its just great to see the look in his eyes and seeing him walk out in the woods with that 243 over his shoulder..back at the house he talked to his mom and brother with the same passion in his voice about the hunt...

Just don't blink. My "little boy" is now in college. Hunting without him with me just isnt the same.

Man, I can relate with that. I can't imagine opening day w/o my son to hunt with. Its been 40 years and we hav'nt missed opening day yet, not to mention hunting hogs, crows, geese, squirrels and other game. Sometimes, we just hang around the camp fire and talk hunting. I dread the day when I won't be able to make that opening day tradition.
