Well, I just finished talking to the Ft Pickett military base about 1 hr from here and they said that they have a late antlerless only season that runs til the last sat in Feb!!! Bow only on 6,000 acrs they take 60 hunters a day max, and have been getting only 1/2 of that so far...He said there are just too many deer and they need thinning!! This will be a great way to kill some time in the woods until spring gobbler...$30 permit and off I go!!!

steve, I don't know how you deal with your regs dude....one deer a year is just not enough for me..I repsect you for it, God knows you earn your deer..what differences there are in states...I mean at my hunt club during reg gun season we can kill 4 deer a day!! Is MN just not very populated with deer or is it just where you are?

I agree. One deer a year is terrible.

Well I must say I had one of the best hunts all year on my late archery season special...I went to the military base about an hr from me today and picked a stand that looked good and saw 16 deer in 4 hrs...one nice buck and the rest were antlerless...we can only shoot antlerless deer this time of year in this special late archery season...none were close enough for a shot, but it was cool to see that many deer on my first sit in a new place...I will be back next Sat..I have til last weekend in Feb here to see if I can really get a late season archery kill!

It sucks Landon but It Is what It Is. Happy you had a good hunt today. Sounds very promising for your up coming hunts. Best of luck!!

I'm curious. What happens if you failed to harvest a deer for a season?

Even on public land? I know quite a few people that didn't shoot something gun or bow for the last three years.

Maybe I need to look into non resident permits in VA. I would love to get just a doe.:)

GFY--on real public land in VA, you can be assured there is a massive amount of pressure on those lands. It can be hard on those properties to kill a deer.

On public land it is much harder. On private land it's not hard at all. On some military bases it's easy...Brett hunts on a military base that sees tons of pressure...the base I went to is 40,000 acrs and sees pressure only during firearms season, however, the bases estimates around 2,000 deer live on base....your chances are good.
