I hunt a lot of public land, and have hunted this particular WMA since day 1, killed my first deer in 2011 about a mile away from tonight's setup. I've killed a couple decent bucks on private property with my bow, but never had a shot at a good public land deer. This one isn't my biggest buck, but he is by far my biggest public land buck. I guess you can say the bar is now raised. One buck tag left for this season in Tennessee. The story: I came in by canoe to a spot I've wanted to deer hunt for 3 years now, but not worth dragging a deer the long way through bad nasty thickets to the road access. I climbed the river bank around 3pm and followed a small creek till I got to a bunch of oak trees near a field. The acorns and deer sign were decent. I climbed a chinkapin oak facing into the woods, with the field about 15 yard behind me. The buck actually came down the field edge before turning into the woods, and he walked right under my tree. I was filming it all, but then he spooked when I was at full draw and ran behind the tree. The rest was not on video, but I heart shot him at 10 yards. I was afraid I might have hit him too low, it looked OK but I just wasn't sure. The suspense was killing me. I waited about an hour till dark and went to look. Found half of the arrow and very spotty blood, but pretty much walked up to him within 15 minutes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
That's pretty damn cool man! Anytime to get it done on public being doe or buck is something to be proud of!
Congratulations!!!! Awesome Buck and a story worth telling! Hard work makes us appreciate our "trophy's" so much more! Even if they aren't all 160" deer. Its about the experience each and every one of us go through to achieve success. Good Job!
This is awesome! I have a public land spot that fits your description. A canoe is the first thing I thought of as well and it is a LONG drag too. I don't have a canoe tho....yet. Congrats and thanks for sharing!
