Ok, so i hike out to my spot at 5:30am climber on back w/ back pack and bow in hand. 1st. Its very hard to be quiet walking though the woods when its pitch black out. 2nd. I make it to my spot get my gear off, start to put the climber on the tree, when they bang together ** CLING** Then A deer Hufffs like 20 yrds from me Scares the crap out of me, I first thought about Blair Witch and i hear it run away. F*@K... Well i must have come in quiet enough for them not to hear me till that point. Guess thats good. 3rd. I forgot my rope to pull up my bow and pack. SO i had to wear my pack and straddle my bow on the stand. Not fun. 4th. i get up in the stand screw my hooks in to hang my bow and pack. As im digging my screws out i drop my range finder to the ground. F*@K again........ SO climb down get the finder and climb back up.. After about 3 hours i see a coyote zip by about 100yrds away. I forgot my coyote call. Damn again... SO i get down and do some stalking, scouting etc.. find some good trails and fresh rubs. My buddy texts me and says he just got to his stand and forgot his arrows... Now i dont feel as bad. He come to my property and hikes in to meet me . as he is about 100yrd or so away he signals me to look up. There is the coyote above watching me below. WTF.. this thing stalking me? we both splt up and try to get him but he is long gone. AFter about a mile or so scouting the sky opens up and pours rain. BUT i did remember a rain coat. SO thats my opening day story. Hope you all had a better one.
It WILL get better. Most people have made all of those mistakes multiple times. Just try and learn something every time you get into the woods. Good luck.
Gotta love Opening Day! It usually takes me a good 3-5 sits before I actually remember all of my gear and am able to get in and out of my stand without some sort of screw-up. It's just working off the rust from the off-season!
How do you forget arrows.. (knock on wood) I have yet to do that and lets hope never do. But atleast you came out of the woods with a good story.
So things can only get better I've got a check list on my iPhone I always check before going out and it's saved me a few times.
I didn't forget my arrows I forgot my broad heads had to climb down as the sun was coming up drive home get them then get back in my stand. At least i didn't drop my range finder. I saw deer on the ride back home and on the ride back in but not from my stand "damn". Must have seen a dozen deer today and a coyote.
I'll keep going through my gear, time and time again.Call it a dry run studder! I'll still forget something! As we get older it get worse...way worse....''I thought I parked on this here ridge?'' lol Come on .....Oct 8th!.........Have great times all.....
Ain't life great! You managed to live through it laugh at yourself and tell us a funny story. I bet it didn't ruin your day either. I always forget things or manage to drop stuff from my stand. It gets better.
