This season hasn't been my normal season. It started out with me finding out that the landowner decided not to plant the fields this year, but with me having a brand new daughter and busy as can be, I found out to late in the year to plant any food plots. I've hunted this particular piece of property for three years and every year the patterns have changed. This year had been even different. I set up a trail cam over a pile of corn about the middle of September, and to my surprise I had a decent buck on cam. By the time opener rolled around the corn pile was gone and I set up across the field to find out if any deer were moving in that direction. The afternoon of the October 1 my wife and I set and saw only two deer. But one was him, the big 8 (the big 8 because he's the biggest 8 on the property). He was running across the field with a small fork horn at 88 yards. They were there then gone but I was excited to see a decent deer, on opener of all days. The rest of the month I only got to set a couple more times. On the evening of the 28th I saw him again. He came out on the other side of the field and started making a scrape. I said that's it I'm setting up over there. So on the 30th my wife and I set up in a ground blind about 50yrds across from the scrape he made. That afternoon we saw absolutely nothing. The rest of that week I was feeling a little down because I wasn't seeing anything on the property and I usually have at least a doe down by now. On the morning of the 5th I decided to take my little sister with me to sit in that ground blind. We got settled in at 7:15 and was ready to wait. At 8:00 we could hear crunching across the field. At 830 a doe stepped out and I was trying to pick out a place for a shot. I watch for just a little bit and my sister said there he is. I look up to see him at 50yrds. No problem I practice this shot everyday, I am very confident in this shot. He turns and starts to walk away. I set my pin at 55yrds and wait for him to turn. He turns, I draw, stop him and let go. He was slightly up hill and I swore I watched the arrow go right over his back. I said crap I missed and my sister said no you didn't. As I was thinking she was nuts I give some time and go look for my arrow. No blood no arrow. I go to the point I last saw his rack in the woods and.... there he laid dead, not 30yrds from where I shot him. I couldn't believe it. Shocked I go and get my sister. It was her first experience with anyone killing a deer and my biggest deer to date. My daughter enjoying the deer And my sister and I Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
