So here is my attempt at My first bear bait site. The site is located in Pittsburg, NH. Our property sits on a river and we have about 10 acres of woods. Right now there is an abundance of berries (blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries... Delicious) so there are bears around. I posted some pics in another thread. The actual site is located 100 yards from a private dirt road that gets a small amount of traffic. The property also abuts posted town land. The site itself is at a junction of a high traffic game trail. If a bear is eating from the site it will give me about a 15 yard shot. Here are some pics: I can't place bait until the season starts. I should be able to place bait once a week (it's a 4.5 hour drive from my house). I'm open to suggestions / critiques. My family owns a restaurant so I can get old breads, turkey scraps, used cooking oil, etc very easily. My plan is to top that with molasses. I'll update my progress throughout the season as well.
I assume that the bait goes into the wedge? If so you will only get moving shots as the bear goes to and from the bait and the bear facing away from you while at the bait. I take a hollow log and cut off about 24" and dig it into the ground and leave about 5" sticking above ground so it does not fill with water if there is a lot of rain and then cover the stump with a big flat rock. I mean a rock that will test your oats so a coon does not slide it off the stump. They are strong!! I then put backing on it so the bear approaches from the side and gives a good angle for a shot. Being lower to the ground they often lay right there when eating the bait. I also use smaller bait so the bear can't grab a big chunk and run off. If they want to eat they have to stay at the bait and give you lots of time to look them over! Not saying yours won't work but this is what works best for me after years of bear hunting.
Thank you for the advice! My thought was to maybe put a barrel in the wedge with a small opening to put the bait in. Not much more I can do/ change before the season starts. But that would keep the bears from going too far in.
