I have bow hunted for 34 years and have never hunted whitetail. We don't have them here in Utah. Last week I was able to go on my first whitetail hunt. I am hooked. It was a ball. The first morning I had a 8 point about 17 inches wide about 10 yards away. It saw me draw back and took off. Then 2 days later I had another 8 point about 17 wide again get within about 23 yards of me. I waited tell his head was down drew back. I'm not use to wearing gloves I hit the release shot 20 yards in front of him. The amazing thing is I grunted at him and he started to work his way back. My first thought was, this is like elk hunting. He got with in 40 yards and held up. So I shot and ( I know everybody here has heard it a million times ) I hit a branch and shoot under him. He didn't come back after that. When I shoot and he ran a little fork horn buck came out. If I would have been patient I think the 8 point would have come closer. My screw up. Then Friday morning this guy came out and I shot him at 18 yards. He is a weird deer that my cousin said if I saw to shoot him. I know he is a different deer but hey I got him.
Congrats on your first whitetail! I've only been hunting them 5 years and absolutely love it. Being from Wyoming, they didn't have them in my area growing up but now there are plenty and some real dandies. I've taken 8 in the last four years and I consider every one a trophy, buck or doe!
Congrats!!! its my first year hunting and I hope to knock one of them down by the end of the season!!!! Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
