After reading many posts last season about deer logs - I thought I'd give it a shot...and kept one on my phone. I had never done so - and more than anything I was just curious "how much do I really hunt" and "how many bucks vs. does do I see?" Here are the overall numbers from my first deer log - no significance really, but was able to answer my questions above and will be neat to compare year to year if I maintain logs in the future: Oct 2nd - Jan 15th Total # of hunts = 24 (4 were shotgun) Total Hours = 71.1 (3 hours/sit avg) Total # Deer = 175 (7 deer/sit) Bucks/Does = 53/122 # deer under 30 yards = 69 (3 deer/sit within bow range) Avg Temp = 44 degrees Deer Harvested = 4 (a buck & doe each with bow/gun) (1 deer tagged per 6 hunts) Looking at these numbers now - makes me wonder if you can conclude anything about Doe to Buck ratio based on only 24 sits...because my findings show a 2.3 does/buck ratio...never would have guessed that low. I also find it amusing that I spend time every single day thinking about hunting - but only actually "hunt" 71 hours per year
I keep mine on an excel spread sheet. I just jot down a few things in stand and then transfer over to the excel sheet later.
"I also find it amusing that I spend time every single day thinking about hunting - but only actually "hunt" 71 hours per year." LMAO, it is so true... I've never kept data on my hunts, maybe I'll try that this year. Then again I may not want to do that, my wife might use it against me in divorce proceedings. Your sighting stats are interesting, I wish my ratio was that good.
It's a free spreadsheet app on my blackberry called GridMagic. The nice thing being I was able to email it to my laptop and it came as an excel sheet. All I had to do was add formulas to total everything and ready to go. The ratio did suprise me...but as I posted in the "how was your rut" thread...this was by far an "above average" year for buck sightings and movement...but slightly below average for 3.5 year olds and older...
