I got my first coyote with my bow this week. The places were I usually hunt won't let us kill them so when K12, Deb, Louie and I went down to Brown Co. for a doe hunt.. coyotes were also fair game. I was standing on the ground in some cedars when I heard something crunching my way. I could just barely see a coyote trotting my way through the grass and goldenrod on the other side of the cedars. It cleared the cedars and was angling away at a quick lope. There was a break in the goldenrod about 17 yards away. In a bowfishing-ish manner, I drew, swung, aimed and shot. It sounded and looked like a good hit but I was thinking.. dang, that coyote looked kind of rough. anyhoo.. another coyote showed up from another direction about 1.5 hours later, a really beautiful coyote. That one gave me a standing still shot at 12 yards and I -gulp- shot right over it. I had a brain freeze. (actually a whole body freeze...it was really freakin' cold... that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) So, I go trail the first 'yote. It left a great, short blood trail. I could see it laying on the trail and I thought... yep, it looks rough. The closer I got, the nastier it looked. The thing had more scabs and crust than fur. It's tail was like a rats tail. It was fat and very heavy... but ugly and very, very stinky. It looks way better in the picture than it did in real life. Deb saw my truck parked up on the hill and came to see what I was doing. She saw the bloody arrow and offered me the use of her deer cart. I said, we don't need the deer cart. She saw me holding a heavy duty garbage bag and laughed.. "what the heck did you shoot?" Deb being a trooper, even carried the bagged yote most of the way out. I'm getting a full body mount of it done. Not!! I did cut it's head off. He must have been really old. Incisors are down to the gums, missing a canine and funky tooth wear. BTW, Deb and Louie both got a doe. K12 and I didn't. And yes, I did wear gloves and wash off anything that touched that 'yote. ..done rambling. :p
Congrats, I have killed them with a gun, but I always have something come up with a bow. My arrow fell off my string just as I started to draw on one Saturday morning. Never had that happen before. Again congrats on a great harvest.
The state ground around here just doesn't allow any coyote hunting for some unknown reason. The University property we hunt is 'deer only'. Which is a bummer because it's full of coyotes and turkeys.
Great Job... ...this must be the year for them. I shot this one earlier this year. I watched her fall too, which is good since they are so dang fast. It is also the third one I have shot with a bow. In fact, if I knew a nice buck was near I'd still have shot. I treasure getting a yote with a bow as much as shooting anything else I have hunted for. Again, nice job.
Damn, he don't look to well but that sure don't take the smarts away from these things. A big congratulation's to you Christine, well done!!!
Congratulations, Christine!! Too bad you couldn't have got the one with the pretty pelt. Must have been the day for coyotes, huh?
Congrats, and you're right that is one UGLY yote!! I've shot a couple in my subdivision that looked like that, mangy critter they can be. He would have had a tuff time making it thru the winter with only scabs to keep him warm.
Congrats on the yote !! Getting a shot off at one is hard enough. Getting a shot at two is pretty darn good especially from the ground !! They don't miss much at all and usually peg any moment !! Tim
Congrats Christine!! That is one UGLY 'Yote, that's for sure. I gut shot the one that came by me chasing does about 3 weeks ago, and it ran a good ways, I didn't care to trek down into the bottom to go get it, but I know where it went. Nasty things, I'd have a hard time letting one go by me without putting one in it......
