This is now my current largest buck to date, Any guesses on age i know it’s hard to tell because he’s either got no body or I’m sitting on it, this is by far the most exciting and luckiest hunt i ever went on here’s a little background ... I’ve hunted northern Wisconsin ever since my wife and I started dating. I hunt public land with my ,now, father in law and my wife’s great uncle and his grandson. I’ve hunted there for 8 years and in those eight years I’ve seen a total of 3 deer until this year (2 doe and a Decent buck that I never got a shot on) so needless to say I’ve eating tag soup for 7 years straight but there something about “deer camp” that keeps you coming back. SO fast forward to opening deer gun season 2010….. wake up 6:00 (holy shi* I’m late) but hey sitting in the dark isn’t that fun anyway at least not to me. Bust buns to get over to the cabin and head out. On way to the land we hunt we see 0 deer. We turn on to the dirt road in a large area that was clear cut 2-3 years ago and BOOM ¼ mile in a Nice heavy racked 8-10 pointer bolts across the road. Heart starts pounding and now we are super pumped (thinking… maybe that’s a good sign) park the truck get the good ‘ol blaze orange on (I wasn’t wearing jeans hunting as it would appear I had camo pants on but had to drag about a half mile) and start hoofing it to the stand, by stand I mean we sit on the ground against a tree and 90% of the time watch the leaves fall. 10 minutes later I can hear some crackling to my left which turns out to be my buddy messing with the tube on his grunt call (we are sitting 20 yards from each other looking down over a huge ridge). 5 more minutes go by and this bad boy catches my eye (below) he enters the scene from right to left walks right in front of my buddy and stops I click off my safety and he looks directly up the hill at him (not me heheh, that’s what I call good luck) so he sits really still and trys to raise up on him but can’t as soon as he moves the deer walks into a little patch of pines and we both lose sight of him. He pops out the other side head down, right to left broadside 110 yrds or so and I let one fly and dropped him right on the spot. That’s a summary of my opening day 2010 WI deer Gun Season.
Ryan, CONGRATULATIONS! You have my respect for enduring what sounds like tough hunting conditions for so long and to finally make it happen is just awesome. You should feel really proud man.
Way to based on the size of the rack i would say 2.5yr old tops. But none the less a great hunt to cherish for a lifetime, congrats.
thanks everyone its so cool to get the congrats from such a great bunch of guys (and gals sorry) that buck was a long time waiting and a lot of me and nature spending some quality time together
Yep I will stick with my original guess due to knowing how poor the genetics are up there and the amount of pressure recieved. Lack of proper nutrition up there also plays a role..I think im wording this right but hopefully you get the picture. Chit Man I forgot to congratulate you on a fine buck for that area on public land.
