So upon gutting him, where did you actually hit? With the arrow exiting that low and the shot placement, I would have thought you would have touched the heart. Also with that low exit, you probably had a pretty good blood trail didn't you? How far did he actually go?

    Congratulations too!

No heart, shot was too far back for that. The buck was quartering to me, which is a shot I shouldn't have taken. Entered dead center on his left side just behind the shoulder, took out the near lung and exited about 4 inches back further on the opposite side right on the brown/white hair line. No liver, no diaphragm. Just one lung.

Lots of blood at impact, then the blood trail was good for awhile, then nothing. After 100 yds couldn't find another drop. From that point it's about 100 more yards to get into the creek where he eventually died.

I'm still mad at myself for taking a bad shot, but I'm thankful that we were able to recover him.

I didn't realize he was quartering to you that much. From the camera angle, he's perfectly broadside, and it looked like you tucked it in there nicely. I'm with Jeff, I wouldn't worry about that one, that's NOT a bad shot. Just hit him a little higher and a little more forward. I shot a doe last year on that angle at 15yds. I hit the "shoulder" and the close side, and it punched through perfect on the other side. Two holes, but not a complete pass through. She barely made it 25yds.
