Wow, thats some crazy info! 190 for a 2.5 year old is pretty impressive, too. The buck I shot last year weighed 220 dressed, and he was at least 4.5

Nice buck and a wild story behind him. Without the tag, you would think he was born a mile or two away. That is unreal!

Wow. Hell of a 2 1/2 year old. Dispersal rate is mind boggling. Hope the research is made public.

This is how deer prevent inbreeding. If they only went 5 miles from their birthplace it would not be prevented. 31 is farther than I expected though.

Very good read, and congrats on I fine buck.

Studies have shown that 75 to 80% dispersal rate is the norm. It also shows that 90% of all dispersal occurs from September thru October at 1.5 years of age. It also shows that terrain, habitat and deer density play a big roll in how far a deer will relocate. For example, if a buck was born and raised in a river bottom he will most likely relocate to a river bottom, ect, ect. In relatively flat open areas 10-15 miles seem to be the avg. In thick rough areas 5-10 miles are the avg.

Bucks will often relocate and adjust several times form 1.5 to 4yo before they establish a true home range and core area.

I killed a buck that was tagged. He dispersed at 1.5 and relocated 8 miles away. They quit tracking/lost him at that point. I shot him a 5.5 12 miles from where he relocated to at 1.5, but only 4 miles from where he was tagged as a button buck.

Christine and I were out there today helping track & drag my husbands buck , so we did get to check the scale and it was only off by 1 Pound , so my buck dressed out at 191lbs .

Just found time to read this. Pretty cool and I'd have never guessed that buck to be 2 1/2.

Congrats to your hubby as well, you guys put down some awesome deer every year. Surprised Christine hasn't put one down yet.

Nice videos and story. I knew bucks or deer would migrate but never in a hundred years would I have guessed they would relocate that far.
    Amazing!
