Here you go. Shot wasnt pretty, when I saw him he was walking directly away from me and it took a series of grunts to get him to turn. He finally turned and started working up a small ridge behind the cover of tall weeds. We he stepped into a clearing I guessed him at 35 yds. Held my 30 pin a little high and let fly. Nothing about the shot was good. I rushed it, I forgot to check anchor points, breathing ha, I was just trying to stay in my stand. Shot entered the last two ribs and he reacted like a liver/gut shot. He slowly trotted about 10 yds and stopped looking stunned. I quickly nocked another arrow and drew back and let it rip only to find out I must not have nocked the arrow correctly and dry fired my bow. Re-nocked the arrow but at this point he was moving and made another less than terrific shot. Called my budy talked it over and decided to check my first arrow and wait. I wanted to back out but not sure of where he went I didnt wat to bump him. Found my arrow and it looked better than expected. Lots of bright red blood and some stomach matter. So I just decided to sit. I sat where I found my first arrow waiting on a friend to help track and I keep going over the debacle that just took place. I am pissed that I made a poor shot and am nervous about the track. About an hour goes by and I hear a thrashing where I last saw him. I slowly walk to the top of the ridge to find him bobbing his head right where I last saw him. I grabbed the bloody arrow that was perched against the tree so I would be able to start the track and decided to finish him off. Shot a deer with the same arrow twice. 1 dead deer 1 hell of a story and a decent buck. He grossed 116 and will be my biggest bow kill.
Also...noticed INdiana is where you live...what part of the state? I'm a northern edge boy hunt mainly Elkhart County.
Im on the opposite end of the state in Vanderburgh county. This was an urban buck so I still have a buck tag left. The only problem is that saterday left me arrowless.
haha! I'd say duct tape that same one if broke and use it! I get down to Davies county (Odon/Crane Naval Base) area from time to time but never any farther. Congrats again bud!
Thanks, good things happen when we wait. If I would have pressed on and picked up the trail right away I am sure that would have been the last I saw of him.
gotta love a great buck with an even better story. doesnt matter how you got em all that matters is the rack in your hands!
