I posted last week about my son getting his first turkey and that we had never hunted them before. Well this past week was my turn. Couldn't hunt until Saturday morning. It was a pretty calm morning with a fine mist in the air at times. It had rained the previous night and a blanket of WET covered everything. That morning we never heard a gobble which on my sons hunts the previous 2 weekends we always heard them but had a hard time seeing any until I called his up the hill and my son shot him. Well I did my rookie--newbie attempt at calling about every 20-30 minutes. At around 8:00am here comes a tom over the hill ninja like and never made a sound. He came toward my decoys and put on a little show by fanning out and did some strutting. My son whispered that he was shaking and thought that was weird because he wasn't the one with the gun. Well, the tom stayed out past the decoys and wouldn't come closer. Meanwhile my right leg is bent under my rear end and its killing me. I was trying to take some weight off of it but was afraid I was going to make too much movement trying to get more comfortable. This was going on over 10 minutes now and I was hurting. Meanwhile my son looking right over my shoulder is about to hyperventilate....lol. I decided that my deceased Father's old 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge could do the job and with my Dad watching from up above I shot and dropped the bird where he stood. Paced it to 40 yards exactly. Now all of my buddies who turkey hunt say I probably shot the biggest turkey that I ever will and did it in my first 2 1/2 hours of my turkey hunting experience...lol 26.9 lbs with an 11 1/8" beard and 1 1/2" spurs. Already posted but......my son's first from a couple weekends ago.
Thats like shooting a 200" deer. That bird will score over 80. Congrats! That would have been a full body mount for me.
nice, congrats! I still have not taken my first, worked a bird in - two hours! Got turkey fever and took too long a shot - KNEW it was too long and took it anyway... I am hunting Mon and Tues with some Marines from the Wounded Warrior Regiment, volunteering to assist them get in and out of the woods but hoping to get some gun time. Hoping I can get a bird then. there are some of the best guides on the east coast coming to call for them, so that alone will be worth tagging along to watch them work birds. I am also bringing my son along, I want him to meet and help out with these great Americans. congrats to you and your son!
