Even though I started at one of my "back up" spots, it started out as another typical day. Hear a few far off gobbles, but none on land I can get to or have a chance at calling the bird to me. So I left there and got to my normal spot just before 8:00. Covered a lot of ground but no gobbles. I was walking this new skidder road out to a field when I spotted some turkeys at the field edge. I quickly duck down & hide. Gave a few soft yelps to no response. After several minutes I crawled a few feet to a log. At this point the birds were out in the field, jakes fighting & chasing, longbeards just feeding. 6 total. I was now able to pull out the slate call. Soft at first, but they ignored or didn't hear me. So I called a little louder and the 3 longbeards heads popped to attention immediately. A couple more clucks and they turned 180 and came right in. As the 1st one got to the edge of the woods & saw no hens, he ducked off fairly quickly. I was a little hesitant to shoot, it was probably a solid 40yds. But when the 2nd one popped up on the road I blasted him and ended my season with a smile:D 18.4# 8 3/4 beard. 1 1/8" spurs
Congrats on the bird bud. I still haven't been out, I just don't have the.motivation this year. I'll probably try Monday morning. P.s. where's the pic of your dads trout? Haha.
Congrats, Ryan! Bird was almost identical to mine (much bigger spurs on yours, though), so it makes sense you would use the same thread title as me:D
