I'll keep the long story as short as I can. I passed on this guy in the morning (hence the I'm an idiot thread). Don't ask why cause I really don't know. Happened pretty quick and all I could think about before the season was the "other buck". Walked around at work shaking my head all day and smacking stuff around. I was really pissed at myself. Fast forward to afternoon. I had a good idea (thought anyway) where he would be bedding. Setup on the other side of the area where I thought he was (or others) in a nice little funnel. Saw a flash of deer working its way down the hill on a logging road. Saw rack and as it got closer I could NOT believe it. The same dude that I saw in the morning. I was holding out for the monarch in the morning and passed him and said screw the monarch in the afternoon I'm shooting this. 30 yard broadside shot and I drilled him! (This is the really long part that I'll keep short) Basically it was the exraction/recovery from hell. He ran the ridge for awhile and then decided to go over the edge and down a STEEP hillside to the bottom of the ravine. Turned into a long night with 4 wheeler, ropes, lights, permission(s) from neighbors, buddies helping, getting tired and aggravated etc.... Decided to pull out and get him in the morning before someone ended up in a fight lol. By the way I owe some people some favors (good to have good friends) Went back to where he went down the hill in the morning and marked it really good. Drove around the other side of hill to neighbors property and entered from there. Finally found him down there and got him out and home. Still can't believe he came down that trail to me. Anyway.... here he is. I'm on doe patrol now.
I agree. I want to hear the whole story!!! Congrats again! Nothing wrong with that deer at all. I like that extra point on the inside of is main beam. Looks like he had another one going on the other side. Did it get broke off? Anyways, that is a solid mature whitetail. You shoud be proud.
Again, Great buck and a really smart (2nd) hunt! I love reading your stories, they're among the best. Congrats.
congrats and great story. I know how it is dragging big deer, at least you had a few extra bodies and a 4 wheeler, I didn't.
NY, I've gotta say I'm 100% impressed. As someone that has a lot of time in hunting NY, I know bucks like this aren't the norm and are quite an accomplishment. Congrats on getting it done again on a fine NY whitetail.
