I like the Muzzy Phantoms 220 grian with bleeders, however when I shoot my trad, I take off the bleeders, the they become a two blade broad head. I really can't tell a lot of difference with they way the fly.
I don't think you can go wrong with Muzzys. I have shot them for years. I switched to MX-4s last season, but I have not harvested a deer with them yet. Some people say that 3 blade BHs get bettter penetration. Even if the 4 blades have three inches less penetration, they should still be sticking in the dirt about two to three inches.
The three blade should penetrate better than the four (all else being equal); however, your 2514 shafts would be spined correctly for a hard cammed bow, 29 inch arrow, 70 pounds or greater draw, WITH a 125 grain point. The 100's may be too light for your rig. Remember to try and get better than 12% Forward of Center balancing for both better flight and penetration. I would experiment with cheap points shooting groups over a few weeks before deciding on broadhead weight.
I'll tell you this: I've shot six deer with the Muzzy MX-3 this season, and the blood trails have literally been astonishing... Even though I'm on Muzzy's pro staff.. I still tinker around with other heads from time to time. I like to confirm I'm still with the right company, and I also like to have first-hand experience with a few of the heads out there garnering the most attention. I've shot deer with Rage heads before, and yes -- they do leave incredible blood trails. But I'm telling you that each of the deer I shot with the MX-3 this year had blood trails that easily rivaled any of the ones I've personally seen with the Rage, and that's saying something.
While I've tried some different BH's, it seems like the standard muzzy 3 blade's make it in my quiver during crunch time more often than not... They are very reasonable, fly good, tough as nails, and seem to get the job done....
Greg I have to say as many deer as I have shot with Muzzy's I have always had great blood trails. What else do you need?
Muzzy is definetly tried and true but I went with the G5 Montec CS due to it being all one piece. No moving parts.
I have shot Muzzy's for years. I liked the MX-3's and the wounds they placed on deer, but I could never get them to fly like the 3 blade Muzzy. For me, if I can hit where I am aiming, the deer is going to die, MX-3, 4, or a regular 3 blade Muzzy. I am happy to only spend about $30 a year on 6 new Muzzy's.
I shoot the original muzzy 3 blade 125gr. Shot my buck this year, quartered away at 43 yards, blew through offside from shoulder and stuck in the ground. Do you guys who shoot the MX-3 like them better than the original muzzy? Is it worth making a switch?
