Asking for a little help on what gear I should be investing in for this new and wonderful adventure. Should I still invest in a handle held Gps or is my phone good enough?

When you pack your gear and get ready to head out the door what is the must have item that you don't want to forget when you go to your favorite honey hole.

Cell phone is good enough. Need a good pair of binos and grunt call.

Depends on the situation. How far you going, how long of a sit, time of year, etc. But if you’re unfamiliar with the area I’d bring a compass, flashlight, and knife. Grunt call during mid season to rut. Bow rope. Cell phone for the obvious. Milk weed for checking your wind. Water and some lightweight food if it’s a longer sit.

I started out with a knife, not much else if anything, maybe a bite to eat and water. That was about fifty years ago. Hunting hasn't changed much since...
    .................for me.

Tell us a little more about the type of hunting you plan on doing - where are you at? what animals will you be hunting? when will you be hunting them? how big is the property you'll be hunting? will you be hunting from a treestand? All of these play a role in what types of equipment will be best for you.

This list can get quite extensive. Couple things that are ALWAYS in my pack are listed below...

Thermacell, good knife, couple of gallon zip lock bags, rubber gloves, Ozonics unit (for deer season), binoculars, range finder, spare release, extra pair of socks, spare knife, hunting license and tags. Oh and toilet paper. You just never know...

I'm sure there are a couple other things in there but these are always in there.

How you going to hunt? From a tree stand or on the ground? A simple day pack with the tools others have mentioned is pretty straight forward to organize and take. It gets more complicated if you are hunting from a tree stand or doing a multiple day hunting trip.

I use my phone on land I am familiar with. My backpack will always have the following no matter what I hunt. Binoculars, Water, Wind Checker, Compass, extra layer of clothing, and a snack.

I wouldn't buy a golf cart until I know I'm sure I want to pursue it.
