this was my first year bowhunting for mule deer. i got on 25-30 different big bucks but while stalking got busted by a doe everytime before getting close enough for a shot. when i tried to ambush the bucks were to busy chasing does to take the sensible rout. the area that i hunt in does not have alot of cover other than cactus and mesquite. any suggestions from seasoned mule deer hunters?
I used to hunt Mullies, and I do not think I ever figured that out. When do they rut, do they chase like a Whitetail?
Know what, in da woods and I have a good friend in Idaho, says there are plenty of deer there and that we need to come out. If we ever get out there you are welcome to come along.
Here is a picture of a Mule Deer getting ready to get his groove on. Of course this is in Craig Colorado on land that can't be hunted and taken the day before my Elk Hunt started. He busted a move toward the do and the chase was on beyond my cameras reach. Seemed to rut very much like a Whitetail to me. Just before the shot above as he was following the scent of love
My Dad spent 5 years out in South Central Colorado working on a 200,000 acre Ranch owned by the Nature Conservancy. I spent a summer out there and got to see a ton of Elk, Bison and Mule Deer, but I didn't get a chance to hunt at all. Here are a couple photos my Dad took that I thought you might like.
in the area i hunt they are in full rut from the last week of december right up to the end of january. and yes they were chasing does all over the place
