Hey everyone, I could use your help. I live in SE Kansas and love hunting big whitetails. So I'm not giving that up to go chase mule deer in Western Kansas. Anyway, I would consider jumping the border to try and get one in Oklahoma if they are out there. Any of you have any success? What part of the state? Any public land recommendations?
Surely some over by the panhandle side of the state. Of course if you're unwilling to go to western KS (your own state) I'm not sure if it helps to have some in western OK, lol.
Sorry, let me be more clear. I'm not opposed to hunting in Western Kansas. I'm just not going to use my only antlered tag in Kansas on a mule deer. I've invested time, hard work, scouting, food plots, etc on hunting whitetails in SE Kansas. But I would be interested in getting an Oklahoma tag if I could find a place to go after a mule deer.
I'd be more inclined to go a bit further west and try Eastern Colorado...or SW Nebraska for that matter. Nebraska has a lot of public land in the sandhills.
There are mule deer up in the NW part of the state north of Woodward and definitely in the panhandle. I’ve seen some big muleys driving through that area for work up towards the Kansas state line. There is some public land around Ft. Supply but I’m not sure if they allow hunting.
There is definitely some public ground out west that holds a few mule deer, but not many. The Ft. Supply public land is about 98% whitetails. I had several different leases in that area when I lived in OK. Public land mule deer in Oklahoma is a tough quest. Definitely a better option to go to Nebraska.
Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like it's going to be a pretty tough task, on top of the fact that I have never hunted mule deer before. To make a long story medium length. I started calling churches of Christ in western Oklahoma (I'm a preacher dude). I finally got in touch with someone in the panhandle who is close friends with a game warden. Game warden told me where I need to go on public land to find them and the preacher I initially spoke with is going to let me stay with him for FREE. If push comes to shove and I cannot cut it stalking the mulies in the area I will switch my attention to the whitetails which the game warden was kind enough to tell me where they usually are as well. I was on the Oklahoma wildlife website the other day and I could not see where you can purchase mule tags. Are they part of the archery deer tags that get issued to you when you buy your license? You get two antlered tags and four non antlered tags- is that for both whitetails and mule deer or do you purchase mule deer tags separately?
