Have I ever become enlightened. First my wife had it happen to her, location on the left side of her chin. Now I have it on my left upper thigh on the backside. Very painful, and hard to get rid of. Anyone else contacted this staph infection? After reading up on it its fascinating and scary at the same time. Many causes, and few treatments because of being drug resistant.

Yep about 3 years ago the plant manager at my former job ended up with it. They thought it was something else for a good 2 weeks. When it/he kept getting worse they finally figured it out. By the time they were done monkeying around he had a hole almost the size of a baseball that was draining and oozing crap out of it and he really was about to die. It took weeks in the hospital and he was out of work for 8 weeks by the time it was all said and done. All because they had never seen a case like it at the hospital he was at.

It's a very common "superbug" that infact all of us carry strains of on our own skin. It's only when these resistant staph bacteria make it into an open cut or scratch that they can cause damage as described above. IV antibiotics administered at the hospital with a follow up regiment of topical and oral antibiotics should clear up most cases where an open sore is involved.

I've read statistics that claim through the misuse of antibiotics (not taking the entire prescription) on average 1% of staph bacteria on our skin are "resistant" strains. The most common place to encounter staph bacteria is skin to skin contact, so hand washing is the best preventative measure you can take to avoid developing an infection.

MRSA is scary, but most people with good hygiene and a normally functioning immune system should never have a problem with this bug.

If you really wanna turn into a germaphobe do some reading on VRE (vancomycin resistant enterococcus), resistant clostridium difficile, necrotizing fasciaitis, and resistant pseudomonas. Enjoy haha!!!

Greg, my grandma went in to Vincennes hospital last year during Thanksgiving for a heart attack and caught MRSA while there. She has been in several hospitals since and just got to come home 2 weeks ago. It's nasty stuff. Keep your eye on it and take care.

Most of the 25-bed critical access hospitals have went to a private-room only protocol because of MRSA in my territory... Not fun stuff.

Hope you get to feeling better quickly buddy.

Rubbing alcohol! Even antibiotic resistant bacteria are killed by rubbing alcohol. (get at least 70% strength)

It may not help once the bacteria have set deep into the flesh... but it will kill any staph germs on the surface.

...yeah it hurts... get over it. ;)
(this is directed at people who can't bring themselves to put some rubbing alcohol on a small cut or abrasion... not at Coug's infection!)
