John Elway had a rough start when he first started the NFL and just because he was a good QB doesn't mean he is good at picking players.
Thats why I said it was a terrible decision. No one in their right mind would pick Timmy The Tebow over Peyton Manning.
Great players of the game don't always become great's on the management side as well. How's Jordan's Bobcats doing? In saying that I think It was a good move on the Bronco's. I don't think the staff had much confidence In Tebow at all. Personally I think Manning should've went the niner route. Way better all around team.
Thought for sure it was going to be San Fran (even from the start). Then I thought even more for sure when they signed Moss and Manningham. Seemed like they were hiring some wideout weapons for Manning. Good defense, good o-line, good running game, good TE, and decent recievers. I don't get it. Clear cut favorite to the Super Bowl IMO if he went there. Personally I don't really get the Broncos thing. Yeah they'll make the playoffs, but is that what a guy like Peyton at this point in his career is looking for? Time will tell I guess, but I still don't see them as a big threat to win it all.
I don't get the motivation either, I'm sure it's not about money since he would get a big contract no matter where he went. Anything you read says he a really competitive guy so I'm sure he went with who he felt was going to win game. Which, like you said, should have been SF. I actually thought he would go with the titans and spend the rest of his career on his home turf.
Right now, even though I've always been a Harbaugh fan, I'm hoping that SF ends up without a decent QB. He got Smith to buy in last year and the dude is obviously pissed. They shouldn't have gone after Manning. Risk vs reward.
10 million guaranteed is a relatively SMALL gamble on a starting NFL QB. Sam Bradford got 50 million guaranteed with zero NFL experience. Also, Flynn has had more than one good game...he played very well in start at New England a couple seasons ago...and leading a college team to a national title doesn't hurt either
Take out Flynn and New England and I'd swear you were defending Tebow here. Tebow is technically still a virgin...I checked the rulebook and getting the shaft from Elway doesn't count as sex. What a raw deal man. Took over a 1-5 team, took them to the playoffs and knocked off what many thought to be the 2nd best team in the AFC in the Steelers....Fans love him, Media loved him, and he has done nothing but win at any level since middle school including the NFL......and they dump him like a 38 year old wide out. I hope Tebow wins a Super Bowl with whatever team picks him up. That said, it was a great landing spot for Manning. Keeps himself in the spotlight by ousting Tebow (something Manning is certainly fond of), and its an easy division in his familiar conference. I'd have rather seen him land in Tennessee to allow CJ the freedom of not having defenses key on him anymore and Manning would be protected by arguably the most consistent O Line in the league....and its a state that would elect him Governor afterwards they love him so much.
Manning WAS an awesome QB. I agree that he may be again but a year off and four neck surgeries are nothing to ignore and it is an enormous gamble for what I would consider one of the weaker offensive fronts in the NFL. Its not like teams are going to think "Oh, its Peyton Manning, we can't hit him hard because he has a boo boo." They are going to take his head off the first chance they get and he better be expecting it. 95 million is ridiculous whether you like him or not. He will start strong but is going to be a shadow of his former self... like Namath was his last 5 or 6 years. His offensive line is not going to be strong enough to protect him. My prediction... recurring chroic injury will prevent him from finishing the season and he will be released before his contract ends.
I fixed it for you. It took Coloradians about 1.2 seconds to forget about Tebow. Hell, did you see all the Bronco fans begging for Manning to come to Denver on ESPN? One was even wearing a Tebow jersey!
True enough, I actually thought it was $24 million guaranteed but had to recheck it after I read your post. $10 M doesn't seem quite so bad. One thing though, Flynn is not the starting quarterback yet - he is being brought in to compete for the position with T Jack. Although I'm sure that's just a formality.
ESPN was saying 5 year 95 mill yesterday... or was it 9.5 mill? Maybe I misheard but that does sound more like it for a once great QB.
I'm from Colorado and I'm still a Tebow fan??? Mannings injuries really concern me. We don't have the best O line and I'm with Embry on betting he gets hurt.
True, you are sticking to your guns cowboy. I can respect that. Everything I've read and heard claims Denver has one of the better O lines in the league, and many of the sacks Tebow took were his fault due to poor pre-snap reads. Guys like Manning, Brees, Brady, Rodgers, etc, don't get sacked often because of their pre-snap reads. I don't think Manning will get beat up, but it only takes one hit, so you never know. I still say its worth rolling to dice.
You guys are seriously overrating flynn. He had one great game and Green Bay has one of best group of receivers in the league!!! Give Tebow those weapons and he would do better. Just wait and see fellas. Not sure which game it was two years ago when flynn started and couldn't even score. Peyton in Denver will not work out either. No weapons. Indy had a better team and peyton still couldn't win it all. They will win division and win one playoff game.
