A couple of folks here are moving. It's a pain indeed. Enough of a pain here that I wanted to start a thread and whine about it.

I'm moving from central IL to central Utah. About 2900 miles round trip. Pretty much doing it on my own.

I knew we had a bunch of cra.. stuff, but until you try moving it... dang!!

Boat. Tractor and attachments. Three generators. Two canoes. A 64' x 30 polebarn full of toys and junk. 2000 sq ft of house packed full. Between Kendall and I, we must have at least 40 bows and 300 mismatched arrows. There's bowfishing stuff. 100's of traps and trapping stuff. Taxidermy/antlers/skulls. Hunting stuff. I work from a home office so I have officey stuff. Guns and hundreds of pounds of ammo and reloading supplies (seriously, that stuff is heavy!). I had 130 chickens so there's chicken stuff. I raised and sold veggies so there's gardeny stuff. Way too many books. And then there's some furniture, clothes and dishes. Tho' we don't have many dishes, up until our wedding and our friends took pity on us, we had only about six crummy dinner plates and only two matched. This house came with a brand new dishwasher and in the eight years we've been here, I've never used it... we just don't have enough dishes to warrant it.

We had to buy a place in Utah on lease-to-own contract with a big down payment so we don't have much money to spend on moving expenses. Estimates from moving companies and even truck rental was way more than I can afford and that didn't include moving the guns/ammo/tractor/boat. So, I'm doing it the slow way and hauling it out there myself and praying my truck holds up. I suppose I could sell the tractor and some of the toys but... not gonna happen. ;) (I have, however, given away or thrown away quite a bit)

Kendall has been out there since April. He pulled the trailer (6 x 12 enclosed) out there with his work tools and insanely heavy tool box/cabinet, a reloading bench and the canoe. From that point it's been all me. ;) Since he's at a new job, he can't take the time off to help with moving.
I pulled the fantoon out there and then brought the trailer back. I have made another trip with the truck and trailer loaded down. The trailer is really too small but it will do for now. Probably two more trips with that trailer will be needed. Eventually, I'll need a tandem axle trailer for the tractor. Oh, there's my prius too, I have to get that out there... sigh... This is a bit of logistical nightmare.

Anyhow, packing and loading and driving oodles of miles all by your lonesome is sort of rewarding in a masochistic kind of way... but mostly, it sucks. LOL

I did get the house on the market and 'sold' already. ...but then the 'pre-approved' buyer just got turned down by the bank. Realtor said the bank said they weren't entirely truthful with their info. So much for that. We did have another person who wanted to buy it, hopefully she still does.

Anybody have a good tandem axle trailer for sale or rent? ;)

    Whining over. For now.

My first cargo load. I should've tied a rocking chair to the top.

You ever try stacking one roll of goat fence onto another roll of goat fence? Inside a truck with a cap. That's my idea of a good time.

Don't laugh at my distressed truck cap. And why did I haul I haul fencing all the way out to utah? Because. So there. :)

Instead of a rocking chair, you should have tied the prius to the top. :)

The biggest trailer I can get from uhaul around here is a 6 x 12 enclosed cargo. It's a tandem axle but it's a low height trailer. (need a high trailer or flatbed for the tractor) Uhaul charges $680.00 for five days for a trip from here to Utah.

We paid 2500.00 for the 6 x 12 cargo trailer we're using now and barring having trailer failure/crashing/alien attacks I should be able to sell it for close to $2K when I'm done with the move. (knocks on wood)
But it has a puny 1600 lb payload capacity. :(

A 20ft uhaul truck would get most of the rest of this stuff (minus tractor and prius) out there but it's over $2K to rent and I'd still be paying gas for it. So at this point, I'll just stick with driving my truck. (which seems like it will be ever-so-slightly cheaper, at least until the tranny or whatever blows up halfway across Wyoming)

My truck is getting about 10-11 miles per gallon now. Doesn't seem to matter much if the trailer is full or empty... so I will have plenty of receipts.

Just so you don't get it wrong, I like that you are keeping your receipts, not that you have so many of them! lol

It sucks to be you right now but at least you are moving to the mountains. Is Kendall going to get a couple more wives, if so then they could help.

I don't envy you at all. Luckily we get to expense our move so ill have a freight company move most everything in one shot. I'll follow with the big boat, maybe guns, ammo, and reloading supplies along with the cats and dogs. Wife will follow in a caravan behind me with the baby and her car. Not sure how/if ill bring the small boat yet, not sure if there are any places I can use it to justify putting it on a truck. It only has 55mph rated tires, so pretty sure we won't tow it. I'm guessing we will break the trip up with an overnight around Cleveland, its about 14 hours and 900 miles each way.

That's awesome that you don't have to shell out the money for the move. BTW, When you are looking to buy a property up there, check about having a truck and boat at your house. Some places will not allow you to have a truck or boat in the driveway. Even in unincorporated Kane county, a 3/4 ton pick up was against code. I only know that because we had a racist richardhead neighbor who called the cops on all of us non-Caucasians that had pickups and trailers. :(

I've puts hundreds and hundreds of high speed miles on low speed tires. I figured if you pull it fast enough, they don't touch the ground much. LOL. But yeah, you'll wear those puppies out fast. Thankfully, they're usually really cheap. How small is the boat?

130woodman, Kendall can have another wife if she cooks and cleans. More time for me to hunt. :D

I do have some friends that have come over and helped me with some of the bigger, more awkward stuff. Like the 7' bookshelf, sofa and such. Otherwise, I am exercising my right to be a hard-headed woman and doing it myself. LOL

We recently moved as well and I thought it was a huge pain. However after reading your post my couple mile move doesn't seem so bad now.

This makes me miss college... You know, when moving required a pizza and one pickup truck load. Getting older sucks.

Sell your crap and start over. If its nice stuff that you will need again then load it up.... But if its junk you may or may not need... Sell it.

I've moved so many times in my short life that I've lost count. It must be close to 20 or more by now.

I agree with ya TEmbry, as many times as I've moved in my military career, now I sell things before I move if I don't really need it or it's not that nice, saves me some space!

I've sold the ginormous metal lathe, a 400+lb gun safe. About 130 chickens and accessories. A two person ladder stand. Climbing sticks. A standing drill press that was taller than me. A bunch of lumber. Steel fence posts. :) Sold some strange odds and ends on ebay. (like a resin repro dinosaur skull for over $200.00 lol) There's still a bunch of to sell/give away/dispose of stuff.

The rest of the stuff we use or will use. We do have too many irons in the fire but I think we'd go nuts without having two dozen open projects going at any one time. :) We just have so much big, bulky and/or heavy stuff.

    That's my story anyhow. :)
