The first pic is of Rick's buck. The second photo is of the sheds they had mounted over the years of picking them up. The mount on the left is when the deer was the biggest. The guy standing under them in Gerald Shaffner as I'm sure you know him. Shoots for PSE and has a house full of Booner bow kills. The mount in the middle is sheds found off of the deer when it was 3 1/2. The mount on the right is the actual deer.
Last I heard Milo had been offered close to if not over 1 million for his... a taxidermist in southern vermont has the only rights to reproduce replicas of it. I know of a young girl that killed an albino moose in Vermont this year, Cabela's offered 50k i believe and they said no thanks! Thats one hell of a buck, but like others said he will barely be a 170" typical.
Thanks Lunger... hadn't seen the sheds before. And yeah, I think every hunter in Clark Co. knows Shaff
Justin, good info. Everyone around tried to tell me a new state record though........no way. Only wrong info on heartland bowhunter's site is date of kill is completely off base. I was hearing about this kill around the 1st of November before I went on vacation. As for Shaffner, all I can say is he has shot an amazing array of big bucks. From what I understand he has/had exclusive hunting rights for years on great property and last I heard had over 40-50 tree stands set up.
Yeah, Greg, from what I understand it was around Halloween when he shot him. Everyone was saying state record, but he's about 70" shy. Still the biggest deer taken out of that area. Shaffner...well....either you love him or you hate him. I've been fortunate enough to walk into his house and view his mounts. I would hate to even estimate the thousands of inches of bone that hang on his walls. Like you said, he has been one of the most fortunate people that walks as far as the property that he has exclusive permission to hunt. Can't knock a guy for that.
I just came across another website where Newlin himself posted about killing this deer. He claims he killed it on November 13th. Here's his exact post: "Im neal newlin i live in crawford county IL i took this big 18pt just 5 miles from my house on Nov 13th i was hunting with a bow tech and rage broad heads LOVE THEM!!!!!! the buck was 10 yards when I shot and watched him go down. i havent had him official scored but he has been green scored unofficially at gross 238 and net 232 5/8 this is why we hunters spend the time in the wooods its my first buck with a bow." Now, I don't know about you, but I see alot more that 5-6" in deductions. Amazing deer, I give credit to the guy. I think Net scoring is garbage, but I really would like to know how many deductions it has.
What Dan said, its most likely being scored as a NT. I see more than 6" in deductions, just on the split G3's. Like I said though, Wish I shot him!
