I'm looking into buying a new trail camera for our property but didn't want to pay more than $100 for one. I seen that a Moultrie Game Spy D-55 Camera costs $100 on the Cabela's website. I was wondering if this is a good camera or should I look for something else.
I have a couple moultrie d-40's right now, have been using them for about 3 years now. It hasn't been that bad of a camera, but now one is going through D batteries like it's going out of style and isn't taking night pictures anymore. I'm thinking about switching over to the new bushnell trophy cams, their small and compact and run on AA batteries and the battery life is supposed to be good for a full year! They run about $170 on this website, which is the cheapest around, so for alittle bit more money I would recomend getting something that you will not be disappointed in down the road, best of luck!
Moultrie's are some of the most unreliable cameras on the market. When they work... they work great. But they tend to have things break on them starting after one season. I have two in my basement right now that somewhat work but mostly don't work. I've read a lot of people on here complain of reliability problems as well. There are better camera's out there for the money. Good luck.
As GFY Camp said they can be hit or miss. I have an I-40 that works pretty well when it wants to, but will go periods when it decides not to take pictures. I've sent it back to Moultrie once already and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I also run Wildviews which are cheap and reliable but have a slow trigger speed and eat batteries and Bushnell Trophy cams which I've been very pleased with. I'm waiting on another Bushnell right now.
I would recommend the trophy cam aswell for the extra dollars. If you check the classified section on here I think there is a slightly used one for aroud 140
I've been nothing but pleased with their performance and battery life... I usually get a month or more out of their battery life, sometimes maybe two. Considering how long (or short) hunting season is, that's more than adequate to me -- again for the price paid for these. I always catch them during Bass Pro's Fall Classic, and end up paying like $75 - 80 for them apiece.
The battery life on my Moutrie's have also been great. 3 month life at least. Sometimes more if it doesn't get too cold or hot. That has never been the issue. Greg, have you had any problems with your cameras? Common things I have heard are the display goes out, it stops taking pictures, video stops working, bad connections and the camera just shuts off, etc.
It's not the camera you are considering, but just thought I'd add this to the conversation. http://forums.bowhunting.com/showthread.php?t=14182 I haven't heard back on my email from over a week ago.
Thanks for all the help. Now that I know that Moultrie's are not very good cameras, does anybody have any other suggestions that won't cost me more than $100?
Nope, no problems at all... that's why I like 'em so much. They don't take the BEST pics, but I'm not expecting magazine-quality pics or anything that would rival my Nikon DSLR camera with them. I'm just taking inventory of what's there, so they've worked out perfectly. And I was thinking about my battery-life assessment later... I think I was on the low end with that as well; I'd bet I'm getting closer to three months as well when I put fresh batteries in all the way until I have to replace them.
I'm glad you have had good luck with them and I hope they keep on going. Me? I will never buy one again. Neither Moultrie camera made it 6 months for me without something breaking. And when I read others have had problems as well that is enough for me. Like I said, the camera was great, has some nice features and takes some nice pictures... when it works. I don't know what I would buy in $100 price range. I guess I wouldn't buy one in that range at all. I would probably buy the Scout guard or the Bushnell for $170 as my next purchase. Seems to have a lot of happy people using them.
i dont know about moultrie its self but i know they make tasco and those cameras are awesome and pretty cheap too. i put batteries in mine back in febuary and they are still going and the temp. down here is 95+ everyday. i use duracell they'll keep your camera going.
Ok thanks. I guess I'll have to spend the extra money since everyone seems to like and recommend them.
