Just woundering how you guys deal with the ticks and mosquitoes in early season? Me and a bud recently went to scout some land with a kinda slew on it and the mosquitoes are crazy. I would like to be able to hunt it early seasons without being carried away by the masquitoes any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !
Thermacell will probably be your most common answer. Myself, I simply spray myself down with Off before heading to the stand. Gasp! But what about the smell, you ask!? If the wind is right it doesn't matter. Wind trumps all other scent control measures that a person may or may not take. Sent from my VS500 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
I'm trying a thermacell this year. I have no experience with them, but if I get busted and I think it's due to odor from thermacell, I'll have to find something else or nothing. BB4tw is right about many, many people recommending them. I used to use 100% deet back in the day in the swamps of Mississippi. I think it provided minimal relief, at least for the amount I was willing to apply. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would never step foot in the woods during the early season without one. Once you use it you will wonder how you ever survived without it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Nothing but long sleeves and pants. Suppose it's a risk in the tick dept but I've never had a problem...yet. Sent from my VS985 4G using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Thermacell and permethrin to treated clothes Sent from my Z831 using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
Permetherin. this stuff works great. I spray it on my clothes the day before. Make sure it completely dries up before putting on your clothes. It works great for me.
Thermacell for the flying blood banks.... sawyer permitherin (spelling?) for the land rovering blood suckers Sent from my SM-G935R4 using Tapatalk
Thermacell for mosquitoes and permethrin treatment on clothes for ticks. Never been winded from either. Sent from my iPhone using Bowhunting.com Forums
I don't use a Thermacell because I don't need one. All of the permethrin recommendations are spot on. All of my hunting clothing is treated in it. I wear an ASAT 3D suit during the early season, including the mask and I also wear thin gloves, all treated in permethrin, and it not only keeps the ticks and chiggers off but it keeps mosquitoes off as well. the only exposed skin is part of my face and I carry a small pump bottle of unscented off to use on on that. Granted, where I hunt we don't have swarms of mosquitos like we did where I grew up in rice country. If I did I might use a Thermacell. Also, I save a ton of money on permethrin by buying a quart of 36.8% permethrin concentrate, diluting it into a 1 gallon sprayer and spraying my clothing.
Permathrin for Ticks. Killing Freeze/frost for the misquontos. Cold weather does have some advantages.
If you don't mind smelling like a woman, Skin-So-Soft will repel both. The guys working along the train tracks in this area use it all the time. They are right in the heart of the blood suckers day in and day out. Washes off with soap and water.
All great advice here. I will add that when it comes to the ticks make sure you check yourself thoroughly. About 6 or 7 weeks ago I pulled a tick off my side in the shower the morning after hanging a camera on my lease, cleaned it with soap really well, got out and doused it in isopropyl alcohol as usual, and off to work I go. 36 hours later, I had a bulls eye lesion at the bite. I ended up on the lyme disease treatment (doxycycline) as a preventative measure, and the thing just fully healed last week. Point is you cannot be too careful. I have dealt with ticks all my life and never had a bite like that one. I now hate ticks worse than yellow jackets. Oh and yes I had liberally sprayed down with Deet that day but not permethrin.
Good that you took action. Not sure if this applies in your case, but for others: Permethrin only lasts ~6 weeks or a limited (4-6 washes) so make sure clothing gets retreated. If you're in a real warm or real dense tick area you may also want to check out rynoskin.
I use Sawyer products here on Long Island where the tick problem is huge. Have never had a problem so far, so i`ll stick with Sawyer tick spray!
