As i look out the window at our third snowfall of the week. I mean this in the nicest way possible. You all suck.
Season is probably over here. 2 nights of below 32f shut them down just as it was heating up. It was good while it lasted. Picked about 75 today and left half that many that were ruined. I'll make a final run to my property in NE OK sat...
I've heard tales of a few found here but not sure I believe it, lol. I've sure not found any and conditions have just sucked so far. I didn't find the first ones here last year until April 25th so I think we have plenty of season left here.
you should get in the woods, especially if you have known producing spots. here is the current progression map 2014 Morel Sightings Map
Yeah I have a few good spots but we've been too cold. I think the next few days will bring an explosion of them though, forecast looks favorable to me.
Haven't looked for any yet but will definitely be out next weekend. Couple chances of rain this week along with good temps should get them popping up.
Went out again this morning. Still not picking size. Of we can manage to get the 3/4" of rain forecast by next weekend it's going to be on Curious to see what this one offers up this year.
Just got back from a mushroom outing since we hit 70's yesterday and today. I found a nice little mess of morels finally. We're a bit too dry and not rally humid enough for them to be really running rampant but I found about 1/3 of a small white walmart bag full. Every one of them are doughy soft and fresh, most of them are pale white and smallish but I found three or four right at the end on the way to the truck that are the later golden ones with the courser grain pattern on them. Beautiful shrooms! Pics to come later....gotta take a shower and wash off these ticks.
Looks like a good start. I just got back from walking around checking cams and wanted to look for some shrooms but decided not too. Ground is still pretty dry so I didn't think there'd be any but guess never know. May get some rain tomorrow around here so if temps stay decent will haveta look some.
I'd give it a go anyway and look in the flat low areas where there is still moisture on top. We are pretty dry here but I have a low lying flat area next to a creek that is covered in fairly thick elm sprouts, sparse cedar and hedge sprouts. The typical mound areas that are leftover from coal mining are generally producers here but they are too dry.
Yea I actually walked by a spot like that and stood there for several minutes debating with myself. It a low area next to a crick but I didn't have my rubber boots on and woulda had to walk around decent distance to get back to it. The creeks about knee high in the area to cross but I guess I'll haveta chalk it up to being lazy. Ate too much for Easter dinner I guess ha. Those are usually the good spots here too even if it is dry.
My guess is the tree featured is shedding dead bark, I can't tell but looks like maybe a hickory. Elms are my target trees but I have found some around hickory and cedar and cottonwoods.
Almost certain it's an elm, pic does make the bark look weird. Definitely not a shag bark. As for early season, look for a south facing hillside that is in the clear. The spot I have found mine in gets sun probably 9 hours out of the day. It produces early but also quits early, usually a week ahead of any other slot and stops about 2 weeks ahead of any other spot. Rain tomorrow will help tremendously for those areas receiving it. Rain late week will have the weekend in full swing, my go to area is a bit further north so in 2 weeks I'll start hitting it hard.
