Sorry for the late post, but I was fortunate enough to take this buck this past Thursday in my little "honey hole" behind my house. It has definitely been VERY good to me this year. :D I also took another nice mature doe this afternoon with my muzzleloader in a 30 minute hunt. Had a buck run her right to me (The buck got the pass). That's 5 deer between me and my buddy on a mere 8 acres here at my house. Plus the public land buck I took at the beginning of October. It's been one hell of a season thus far. To say that I'm happy, would be an understatement. Sorry, no good pictures of the doe tonight. I didn't have help getting her out, so I was trying to make quick work.
Grats! Just goes to show you, 5 acres (or 8 in this case) of good hunting ground is better than 200 acres of poor hunting ground.
this is so true...i have a couple of different spots.....some big and some small... my smaller this year seem to produce more deer, (bigger deer) then the bigger ones do...
Guys I really appreciate it. This piece of ground, I have hunted for 5 years I believe. I've ran numerous cameras over the years and we have always had deer there but I never liked hunting it because it was so small. Well, this year I saw more deer over the summer than I ever have before. No joke, as far as watching the surrounding fields go, and judging the pictures I got, for every one doe, there was atleast 2 bucks. I know that number is skewed but that's honestly what I saw all year. It was nothing to see a group of 7 or 8 bucks in a bachelor group. It seems, as if bucks like using the area more than does and I don't understand that, even right now. All the buck sign is astonishing. The 8ish acres I hunt is on the outer edge of a 40 acre tract, surrounded by fields. This year, I have really gotten a better grasp on what these deer are doing. The tree I killed the doe out of yesterday evening is positioned in a 80 yard wide piece of woods between two fields, that connects another portion of woods. There has been 3 deer taken out of that tree alone this year. I'm still trying to get my brain around why bucks like this area so much. These deer do a lot of moving around. They cover a lot of ground, especially this time of year. I'm really glad that I do have this ground to hunt because I can be in my tree ready to hunt 10-15mins after walking out my back door :D
Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I guess I'll be passing on even more deer now. I have one buck tag left and he'll have to be a good'n to get it. If I do kill another buck here, I guess I'll buy a VA license :D
