Im curious as well i see people saying it has an impact but does anyone know what impact? I have heard that a full moon means the deer will be out at night a lot so it wont be good to hunt those days?
I think there is a distinct difference in daytime movement during the full moon period. Like others have said, I'm still in the woods either way. But, noticeably different around my parts.
Charles J. Alsheimer literally wrote the book on hunting the moon phases. Here is one example of his theories: Charles Alsheimer: Deer Hunting: Assessing the Moon's Impact on the Whitetail Rut Like Justin said, I do not stress moon phases anymore because my time is more limited than it used to be. I will not miss hunting time just because it's a "bad" moon phase.
The real question I see here, if feasible, would you make extra effort to be out there if the phase was optimal?
I believe there is a correlation and have seen the most deer when major feeding periods coincide with dawn. If you have a dog, pay attention to when it eats relative to the tables and you will see a correlation. Having said that, I hardly saw squat last year on our lease and this year isn't looking much better. We are taking three weeks off in the hopes that the deer will return to a more natural state.
According to thie Solunar Forcast charting....... best time in my area is supposed to be Nov 1-4. Especially the afternoon to evening time. With tomorrow morning being the best until then. Well, we'll see
I just hunt as much as possible. I put no stock in moon phases. I do know that I see more buck activity from the last week of October (when rattling is the best, IMO) to about the 15th of November so I hunt as much of that time period as I possibly can. I try to remain in my stand all day because I've seen some really good bucks looking for hot does at mid-day, especially from the 6th to the 13th of November.
WITHOUT A DOUBT! the key is pergiee (when the moon is closets each month to the earth) this month was october 10th, the three days leading up to perigee and three days after you will see lots of deer movement in the day. if you can catch a day when moon is underfoot at sunrise or sun down, they will be moving all over the place. If you run cameras I would think you will notice a huge spike in daylight activity last week on the 10-13th. It was perigee, and moon majors correalted several times with sun up and sun down. my cameras showed several mature bucks on there feet in daylight for the first time since early Sept.
I get a limited amount I time each year to hunt and moon phases or not, I hunt. I've taken good deer on full moons and new moons. The way I see it, there is always going to be that one odd ball buck that will not follow the "rules". I want to be there when he isn't playing by the book. As far as the rut and the moon, there may be something to it, but you'll never convince me it's important enough to follow it. The rut happens a the same time every year. The movement we see is mostly because colder temps put more does on their feet during the day, causing bucks to follow. If it's the rut and it's warm, the bucks simply hole up with the does for the most part. They'll move when the does do, which in warm temps is usually at night or very early or late. I looked at moon phases just yesterday in scheduling my vacation. With the dates available that I was able to take off, I put in for November 12-15. Hoping to get some good hunting in as it will likely be the only chance I get in IL as I moved to NC about 3 months ago.
