I have only one oppurtunity to hunt this year, and want to try and get it right. I have the option of the october 20-23, or 27 -31 in South Carolina (saluda) on private property ( not an outtfitter ) The moon will be going from a 3 quarter to a waining crescent. The week before is the full moon, second of season. Is the week after the full moon to soon? are the deer still nocturnal? http://www.moonconnection.com/moon-october-2011.phtml http://www.moonconnection.com/moon_phase_hunting.phtml What should I do? PLEASE HELP!
Personally I wouldnt even consider the moon. From my experiences, mid Oct. (roughly the 15th-the 25th) are the slowest point of a season with the exception of the week after our 2nd shotgun season. If it were me I would take the 27th- 31st as the bucks are entering pre rut heavy at that point around here. I do not, however, ahve any idea what stage they are in in South Carolina at that point.
The later date would probably be the best for reasons as stated above. I would defintely have a grunt call. It would be nice if you could get someone to put out some corn for you to maybe get them coming in. Where I live in South Carolina you can bate, although in some portions of the state it is not legal. A mineral block and corn will increase your chances. I think in South Carolina during deer season there is enough corn put out for deer to feed one of those third world countries.
