Heading out to do an archery mule deer hunt in MT the first week in September. Looking at the South East corner of the state, looking for a trophy, and looking for DIY public land or self guided outfitter. Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Get some good 10x42 binoculars and spend a lot of time using them. When you spot a buck you want to try for. Glass your approach to better plan your stalk. Also take the time to look for deer bedded between you and him. Many stalks are ended when a doe bust's you that you never seen and takes off taking the big boy with her. Also when you get to the area that you know that the buck is bedded and you can't find him keep glassing for him and assume he is still there unless you see him blow out of there. They are good at getting up and moving a little and laying back down. Find him! Have patients and take your time on your sneek. If you think your going slow enough go slower. While on the sneek watch where you are placing your hands and knee's. There is cactus out there!! I like a soft soaled hiking boot with heavy wool sock over it for the final sneek to muffle any sound. Some guys take their boots off but I'm a tenderfoot! LOL Here are a couple books I recomend for the first time Western Deer hunter "Hunting the grey ghosts" by Jim Van Norman and "Hunting Open Country Mule Deer" By Dwight Schuh
If you plan on hunting In southern Montana this fall, you had better check out the area your hoping to hunt, their were several fires burning ealrlier this summer and the southern half of Montana is a tender box. I know a ranch near Glendive that might be available for lease, at a pretty reasonable fee, its about 3500 acres with both mulies and whitetails and some good upland hunting too, if you would like to know more let me know, thanks
