For some reason the mod screws on my bowtech get so tight no matter loose or tight I tighten them. I think it has to do with steel screw in contact with aluminum module. On my lower cam, one of my mod screws was so tight (even after letting some WD40 soak into the screw) that my allen wrench got torqued into a spiral and eventually something gave and the screw stripped. How should I go about getting the screw out? Does anyone have any experience with ez-out drill bits? Any ideas? P.S.....Does anyone know the standard size of the mod screws so that I can replace them with stainless steel heads? Thanks
I've had to deal with this several times. I just drill the head off the screw with a bit about the size of the threads (1/8?). Once the head of the screw is off and the module removed, the shank doesn't have any pressure on it and it backs right out with a pair of pliers. Then I replace them with SS screws (I think they're 10-24 but I'm not certain) that have a real screwdriver head on them instead of those $%^&ing worthless tiny allen heads! (The replacement screws are sometimes 1/2 thread too long so I have to grind them down a bit so they don't stick through into the cable track on the backside.) Don't break a sweat taking a drill to your baby... it really is a cakewalk.
I was going to offer up the same advice.....didn't think it would be too popular. Glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to try something like this.
Whenever I'm thinking of doing something crazy I can always take solace in the fact that there's someone, somewhere even farther off the edge than I am! In this case I just had to remind myself that I'm a machinist and that no matter how bad I messed it up I could fix it.
Good answer Kodiac.. and your right aluminum dosent jive to well with steel. If your having a problem with them backing off themselves use blue locktight on them not red.
You got the brains to do things like that, I guess I just have the balls. Often leaves me scratching my head, thinking, look what you did now you little jerk. :d
