I'm wanting to try putting a trail camera watching a mock scrape. When is a good time to create one and suggestions for getting it created?

My experience with mock scrapes is pretty limited but I have actually witnessed them work out in the field. A couple of years ago on the way to the stand in late October I simply kicked out a spot under what looked to be a good licking branch close to my stand. That same night I had a nice 3 year old pushing some does and he actually went to the scrape and hit it. Pretty cool encounter. I didn't use any kind of scrape formula but I did drop some doe urine on the ground where I kicked out the scrape. May be worth trying to make them earlier rather than later so you can see if the deer will use it almost year round as a communication area or you'll at least have information on when exactly it picks up for your area in the fall and have that information for the future. Good topic I may try this soon too.

It does work. But dont be discouraged if it doesnt work for every mock scrape you create. Location and the right area make a big difference. Focus on the "LICKING BRANCH" That is more important than the scraped up dirt on the ground. Wear rubber gloves and rubber boots.

Get a product called Buck Fever Synthetics and start it in August but earlier doesnt hurt either.

Last year was my first year doing it and I had multiple bucks and does coming into it and using both the licking branch and peeing in the dirt/scraping it up. (Essentially they took it over and made it a real scrape) I ended up getting my largest buck to date on it November 4th last season. Nothing huge but I sure was happy.

Also, dont be discouraged if you dont have a ton of deer coming into it early season through Mid-October. Just freshen it up quick when your on the way out from hunting and leave it be. Come the Rut, they know its there and will check it.

If you got any other questions let me know and i'll help where I can as this is one area I have learned a ton over the past year.

I don't know if I want more than just a couple on different areas of the farm but I guess I'll wait and see how they work this year, maybe I'll create more next.

I usually get mine out in the August time frame. I usually get more does hitting the scrape than bucks.
