I bought a scrape dripper last year and would like to hang it out and utilize it this year, but was wondering where the best place to hang it is? Should I put it close to another scrape that is already been made by the deer themselves, should I hang it right over an existing scrape? What has worked the best and when do you usually start using them? Soon as the first scrape is seen?
I have had better luck placing them over existing scrapes, I start using them after the first week of oct.
I am going to try to set some up next weekend. I never had any luck with them in NW Public land Wisco. Only thing that has worked even a little for me is Smokey's Preorbital lure on the licking branch.
I like to find a few other natural scrapes and put my mock scrape nearby to help create a scrape line. When the regulars notice a new scrape they will be curious to find out who it is and may stick around long enough for you to put an arrow in them. I have also had success creating a mock scrape by itself and deer began using it and continue to use it even though I stopped freshening up the scrape.
I have been having fantastic success in getting deer to make their own scrape exactly where I want them to by either tying down a branch or bringing in a sapling to create the uber important overhanging branch and then applying scent to the leaves and limb tips. Every time I do this, it turns into a scrape location started by the deer. The results are always impressive.
