I've been hearing several guys talk about making mock scrapes in October.I live in Alabama and our rut is in early January. Are people putting mock scrapes in October because it is the beginning of the season, or is it because it is about a month before the November rut in most the country? If so, when and where would ya'll suggest I start making scrapes in Alabama? Thanks for the help.
I have heard from many people that mock scrapes attract deer no matter if it's pre-rut,rut, or post rut. If you go on YouTube, look up bowhuntingdotcom and you can see a video of a guy making a mock scrape in late August. I don't think it matters when you do it, deer are most likely going to be attracted to it no matter what. Hope this helps! If im completely wrong feel free to chime in.
Good question, but I have never used mock scrapes. I can see the advantageous uses of creating a mock scrape line to make for deer check-points on their normal movement patterns, but they need to be made where you already have a good trail from food sources or bedding areas. I've read a lot about mock scrapes and pre-rut lure scents, but I'm not confident enough to make them. I guess you never know till you try it I guess. I would envision placing mock scrapes out a few weeks to a month before the full rut period. Good luck with it! God bless.
