I've been learning from Sheds big post on mock scrapes. Lot of great info!

Ive used BF in the past alot, the only thing i dont like about it is the price and the fact that it seems tow ash away quickly, i prefer the Evercalm because i can apply it heavy to withstand the weather.

I use Sprite or 7 up. I drink a 20 ounce bottle and walk into the woods. In spots near trails I find a tree with a good licking branch and make a scrape under it. Then I pee in the scrape. Works great and usually is active within 48 hours. No upkeep on refilling a dispenser or spending money on scent products.

I make sure I've got the right licking branch, and dose both the branch and scrape under it with Power Scrape. It's worked for me for years.

And if you want the alcohol preservatives added it cost 1.25 extra. I have to buy and process the alcohol.

Last year was the first year I tried using BF Synthetics. I never got any really mature bucks on it but thats partially due to being public land and location i'm hunting. I did get some nice 2.3 and 1 3.5 year old buck on it. It does have potential for 4+ yr old bucks though. I first started my scrape in about Mid-August and I got pictures of smaller bucks and a decent 9 pointer that I had my eye on. I believe he lived close by. He ended up vanishing in September and never got any pictures of him until after I got my buck (8 pt.). Then the following weekend (2nd week in November) I sneak back into this same stand and pulled my SD card to look at pictures while on stand and found out that he came back. Needless to say he came to the scrape that same day 4 times the day I was in their. He came in and walked by me 4 different times that evening.

    How I did my scrapes:

When I would go into freshen up the scrape I would always spray down with scent spray and try to stand as far from the scrape as I could so I didnt step in or near it. I would spray the crap out of the licking branches. From what I have read, mature bucks like the old dead stiff branches and the more vertical they hang the better. Then I would drizzle a quarter of the bottle of the pre/post BF scent into the scraped up dirt. I brought a stiff metal rake with me. LICKING BRANCH IS THE KEY!

The last step that I would do is rub some Evercalm on the tree or close to it. Any scent you left behind I think this helps cover it up so when deer come in to check the scrape you become a deer. Typically before I got to the scrape to freshen it up I would rub some on the bottom of my boots as well.

I've only ever used EC - the best for licking branches as mentioned above. I usually put some on the bottom of my boot and clear the spot on the ground below the branch. Then I put it on the branch - some of the EC will shave off onto the ground while applying!

Never earlier than last September for me but usually I don't put scrapes out until mid October - little later than most. If I fine a scrape near a stand prior to that I will freshen it up with EC.

I will also sometimes use EC as a cover scent but not too much - I don't want to over educate my deer too it. They can get alarmed if you put it on your boots every time you walk to the stand (like I use to). So most of the time I will apply it to branches near where I'm sitting in the stand - it's worked pretty good for me over the last couple years.

no matter what kind of scent you use as a scent on the branch/ground, for deer to ACTUALLY take over a scrape, there are certain (things) that have to be in place.
moist ground with some vegitation on it and a at least (somewhat) shaded area is best

The shipping from BF's website is the killer. $10 for like 8 ounces of fluid. No thanks.

How has the Kishels scrape kit worked for you in the past? it seems to be the most reasonably priced.

Ok people, after lots of consideration I went with Tinks mock scrape starter. The main reasons I went with this is I've had success in the past with it, I found a pretty good deal on bowhunting outlet, and also you get 12 oz of fluid. I wanted to go with BF synthetics however not too many carry it online and for 8 oz it's over 20 dollars plus the cost of shipping. That seems a little pricey to me.

Overall I think most scents can help us, although I don't think it's a necessity for us to be successful. Thanks for all your input! :tu:
