I have made a mock scrape 4 weeks ago and just refilled it for the first time. I have had a camera set up on it for the last 2 weeks. I have got many pictures of bucks that are just passing through and not even checking it out at all. Any ideas on why they are not interested? NEW: When do you start to change the liquid in your drippers from buck urine to a rut liquid. Also what is the best rut liquid to use?
any history of scrapes nearby?? i tend to try to make a mock scrape where i know there have been some before.
4 weeks ago was early September, and most bucks aren't too interested in scrapes at that time. If this is the first time you've freshened the scrape chances are any scent you put down is long gone. Mock scrapes need to be freshened at least once a week to be successful. They also need to have a good licking branch as well. Without that the deer won't take notice. Also, make sure you're minimizing human scent you leave behind by spraying down your clothes, wearing rubber boots and gloves.
I've also noticed most of my mock scrapes dont get noticed until about now. November is when I get the most pictures of deer over mock scrapes.
I think I was able to get a good scrape site with a good licking branch. I also kept my scent to minimum. It might be the timing for now or I am not refilling often enough. I have a dripper so the scent liquid should last about a week.
Try it again, and report back in three weeks. If you are still getting no bucks, then you're doing something wrong most likely.
My scrape isnt getting attention yet either here in southern IL, Last year once it they started getting interested i had two to three different bucks hitting it a day.
I will be going out this weekend so I will be able to check the scrapes and see if anything is hitting them yet. When do you guys change your dripper liquid from buck urine to a rut liquid like doe estrus?
I typical switch around Oct 25th or so - however. A buddy of mine shot a young buck with a recurve @ 15 yards over a scrape with estrus he put on before on the hunt. That was on September 23!!! He said the buck followed the scent to the base of his tree (he must of had some on his boots) and the turned around to work the scrape. He made a perfect shot - deer died in sight. I'd say that your own scent is more important to control that what you choose to put in the dripper!
