I was wondering if anybody else has tried this? I've got 2 huge white oaks right next to each other in my hunting area that didn't drop acorns this year (they dropped last year). So, I noticed my neighbor's whit oak has them raining down in the street like I've never seen before! I shovel them (literally) into a leaf bag and take them to my white oaks where I "broadcast" them under and around one of the 2 big white oaks. I probably spread about 50lbs of acorns. In years when these trees drop their own acorns the deer show up like clock work every evening and I've killed several deer at this spot. Do you think my "mock acorn drop" will work?
Ummm maybe...I am sure they will eventually smell them and come eat em up...I imagine the sound of the acorns dropping probably help as well....now you just have to figure out how to hoist a big bucket up in the tree with a time release spreader so it broadcasts the acorns during daylight hours...you can call it acorn rain...million dollar idea. Just have to pay me a little royalty because it's my original idea. Jk I hope it works for you...let us know how it goes.
Couldn't do that in Missouri. It would be considered baiting because you're artificially placing them there. Just like mowing standing corn....totally legal....but you can't dump additional corn in the plot because it's artificially placed.
I was thinking of picking up acorns on my way in to my stand and throw them out of my stand. I've heard that the sound of dropping acron's can attract deer. But the oaks i hunt are full of acorn's.
Found this for PA: "Except in the southeast Special Regulations Areas, it is unlawful to hunt in or around any area where artificial or natural bait, food, hay, grain, fruit, nuts, salt, chemicals or minerals, including their residues, are used, or have been used within the past 30 days, as an enticement to lure game or wildlife regardless of the type or quantity. Hunters are responsible for ensuring that the hunting area has not been baited before they begin hunting. They should physically inspect the area and question landowners, guides and caretakers. This section does not pertain to hunting near areas where accepted farming or habitat management practices are taking place (example: hunting near food plots on game lands is legal)." (pg 18) See page 53 for baiting permit information in the southeast Special Regulations Areas. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND STOPPING THIS PRACTICE UNLESS YOU ARE LOCATED IN THE AREA MENTIONED.
I do this every year raking my mom's backyard. Fill about 10 feed bags with acorns and then spread as necessary. It produces, just make sure to store the acorns somewhere outside of the house, I did that once and had these little beetle maggots crawling around.
The way that reads, its illegal to even hunt an oak tree if its produced any acorns. "Natural food, nuts" This doesn't mention artificially placing items.
Have been used as an encticement to lure game or wildlife is the key though...naturally falling acorns are not put there by anyone with that intent. Now moving acorns from "x" over to "y" location with the intent of hunting would most definitely qualify if I'm understanding it correctly.
That's not the way I read it. "Used" would mean that it has been placed. Tynmiller made the rest of the point.
I just don't think "used" and "placed" are synonymous. If I go sit in a stand I specifically placed next to a persimmon tree, I'm using that persimmon fruit as an enticement to lure game. If it said "having been PLACED as an enticement to lure game" that would have en entirely different meaning. Of course this is why lawyers are paid well.
Agreed on both. I live in PA and hunting over acorns, apples, etc., is legal if they are dropping from a tree. Put them there and you are baiting. I can't remember if Montgomery is in the unit this is legal though, it might be.
Then the warden can "use" his authority to "place" you under arrest. I think the intent of the law is pretty obvious.
Just tell the authorities that you were broadcasting acorns to grow oak trees...duh..they'll totally buy that
