Has anyone here trained in MMA to get into shape? I have a buddy that got into it about 7 months ago and is trying to drag me into it. I'm bored with the regular gym routine and thinking about some Jiu Jitzu and Muay Thai for a change of pace. Would you consider it as an alternative?

Well, I wouldn't say Jiu Jitsu will get you into shape. I was just sore from being thrown repeadedly. It is fun but you feel the pain when you must let the other guy do the moves on you. At my gym we do kickboxing first before Jiu Jitsu and that is a workout. Cycles of Jumprope, pushups, situps then obviously the different techniques of boxing. I did it more to polish my fighting skills than the workout but cardio is definetely needed. Give it a go I think you will like it.

Thanks for the feedback. I am bored as hell with the same old gym routine and my buddy is tight with the owner who is an accomplished fighter who has fought is all the major MMA organizations. I figure learning some skills while losing weight would be more fun that listening to the roid heads grunting and screaming.

If you train BJJ like you should, it should give you a fantastic workout. If you have a good instrcutor, he will get you into shape as he/she knows that being in physical condition is the most important part of MMA.

MMA training will get you into shape if you work at it. Your long term physical dexterity will greatly improve with cross training in different martial arts.

And training in BJJ and thai boxing is a FANTASTIC combination.

switching up is always good, i dont know much about getting into MMA shape but if you like what you're doing, it'll make it fun and easier to tie those kicks up on the days you just dont wanna do anything.

best part about it sounds like you will have a partner. IMO thats the BEST way to get in shape, get a friend and push each other!
