It was a bogus call. The runner took a step towards second so technically he would have to tetag third which he did not do. He was already stumbling before he tripped over Middlebrooks rear end, not leg. The only way he does not trip over middlebrooks is if he vaporizes.

Oh I'm not saying it's going to be a two and out. Buchholz is iffy right now (not sure who's going to show up tonight). If the series returns to Boston, they should have a good chance to take game 6 with Lackey, but after that, it's going to be rough. Their bats are their strength, but the Card's pitching (along with Detroit) is proving to be too difficult for them. They needed that win last night, imho, to have a chance at a game 7.

I am loving the games though. These are two great teams going at it. Aside from game 1, I bet the rest of the series are good contests.

Bogus rule? Maybe depending on how you look at it.
    Bogus call? Not at all.

Craig has the right to run unobstructed to home, and he is the one who establishes the baseline. As long as Middlebrooks is no longer in the act of fielding (or in this case catching) he is then no longer able to occupy the baseline. I'm not really sure how there is a grey area here. Craig slid into third, took off for home, and tripped over a fielder in his line to home plate. Umps got it right, just like they did in Game 1 with Kozma botching the double play ball.

If Middlebrooks squares up the bad throw instead of trying to make the play, it's still a tied game with 2 outs and awful hitting Kozma. up.

Why was Napoli not pinch hitting in the 9th? Why leave Workman in to hit, only to let him record 1 out? IMO Farrell dropped the ball in the NL park.

The runner establishes his path. Not the bases. Intent is not in question.

Next time you see a runner get caught up in a run down.

If he knows what he is doing, when he changes direction, he will be looking to run into a defender that didn't get out of the way. It is tbeir responsibility to vacate the area.

This is a baseball play. Always has been and always will be.

If they don't throw the ball away, it isn't even a question.

My gray area is he wasn't occupying the baseline. He was laying in the infield with his feet in the air on the pitchers mound side of the infield.

So the runner can go try to mow down the pitcher on his way to home plate and be called obstruction if he can't vacate the area? What if the pitcher is slower than the runner? I see a new fad in MLB in 2014.

He establishes HIS path TOWARD the next base. The only baseline in baseball is the first base line.

Craig got straight up from his slide which is on the 2nd base side of 3rd an attempted to go straight to home plate. HIS PATH was obstructed.

The same is true when a runner is rounding 3rd and is out in the grass in foul ground. A fielder can not impede the runners progress there either.

This happens alot with middle infielders with throw downs and such.

Like I stated earlier. Watch a rundown sonwtime. A good base runner will try to run into a defender if they don't vacate the area after they throw the ball.

It's just a part of baseball. They will revisit tge rule for next season on the matter if intent but that is a slippery sloap when the ump is trying to determine intent. I doubt anything changes.

    A 3 game series now.

Hopefully they figure Lester out tonight (and he keeps the vasoline out of sight).

I was pretty confident there was no way st louis could win all 3 at home. Hard to win 3 in a row against anyone. St Louis has to win tonight imo to have a chance.

Hopefully Wainwright finds it early tonight.

Yeah I figured we had to split in Boston, and take 2 of 3 at home to take it. Hopefully we get a good game tonight.

Yea, they have a script and everything. The pitchers are amazing how they place the ball where the script says but the hitters being able to place it where the script says is even more amazing.
